When the publication was launched, its owner AustralianSuper planned to force subscriptions from its members unless those members opted-out of the subscription within a one-month period.{{Cite web |date=2021-05-19 |title=AusSuper signs up its 2 million members to news website |url=https://www.afr.com/companies/financial-services/australiansuper-signs-up-its-2m-members-to-news-website-20210519-p57t67 |access-date=2023-06-22 |website=Australian Financial Review |language=en}} The move was controversial, and criticised by the Australian Financial Review. Following criticisms from regulators such as the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority, the plans were scrapped.
In August 2024, Industry Super Holdings put the publication up for sale.[https://mumbrella.com.au/industry-super-holdings-wants-to-offload-the-new-daily-845252 Industry Super Holdings wants to offload The New Daily] Mumbrella 21 August 2024
