It was adapted from the 1950 novel The Sea Wall by Marguerite Duras.{{cite book |title=The Sea Wall |isbn=0060970537 |last1=Duras |first1=Marguerite |year=1986 }} The novel had previously been adapted as This Angry Age by René Clément in 1958.
