Plot

Maury Terry, an investigative journalist, made it his life's work to prove that Berkowitz, better known as "The Son of Sam," was not alone on his killing spree. Berkowitz is now serving a 300-year prison sentence for the shooting of 13 people and killing six between July 1976 and July 1977. He was the only one who was ever charged for these crimes, but Terry insisted that Berkowitz was acting on behalf of a satanic cult known as "The Children," which allegedly was connected to Charles Manson.{{Cite web|url=https://www.refinery29.com/en-us/2021/05/10458626/maury-terry-sons-of-sam-netflix-ending|title=Netflix's Sons Of Sam Looks At The Real Cost Of True Crime Obsession|website=refinery29.com|access-date=2021-07-10}}

There were many guesses and theories for Terry's suspicions, which he detailed in his 1987 book The Ultimate Evil. The police sketches of the murderer based on eyewitness accounts did not resemble Berkowitz,{{Cite news|url=https://www.nytimes.com/1977/08/12/archives/the-police-sketch-vs-the-suspect.html|title=The Police Sketch vs. the Suspect|work=The New York Times |date=12 August 1977 |access-date=2021-07-10}} and Berkowitz even alleged that he did not commit all of the Son of Sam murders himself and, as recently as 2020, that he was a member of a cult.{{Cite web|url=https://www.insideedition.com/24736-how-son-of-sam-david-berkowitz-went-from-following-the-devil-to-god|title=New York's 'Son of Sam' Killings: Everything to Know About Serial Killer David Berkowitz's Reign of Terror|website=insideedition.com|date=5 May 2021 |access-date=2021-07-10}}{{Cite web|url=https://wng.org/articles/finding-life-in-a-life-sentence-1617613402|title=Finding life in a life sentence|website=wng.org|access-date=2021-07-10}} Zeman recalls NYPD detectives saying off the record that they believed "Berkowitz did not act alone."{{Cite web|url=https://nypost.com/2021/05/05/son-of-sams-last-victim-at-center-of-new-netflix-documentary/|title=Son of Sam's 'last victim' revealed in chilling Netflix documentary|website=nypost.com|date=5 May 2021 |access-date=2021-07-10}}

Zeman calls Terry "the last victim" of the murders because of the obsession with the case that consumed his life. He first met Terry during the making of his 2009 documentary Cropsey, and they discussed the case and Terry's convictions at length before Terry's death in 2015. The evidence that Terry left Zeman inspired the docuseries, as he explains in the first episode.

Richard Roeper of the Chicago Sun-Times wrote: "In the more than capable hands of director Joshua Zeman, "The Sons of Sam" becomes as much a profile of Terry's obsessive attempts to re-open the case... as a re-examination of the investigation of the ".44 Caliber Killer," as Berkowitz was called by the media until he began sending letters to New York Daily News columnist Jimmy Breslin calling himself "Son of Sam."{{Cite web|url=https://chicago.suntimes.com/movies-and-tv/2021/5/5/22417217/sons-of-sam-review-netflix-david-berkowitz-documentary-maury-terry-accoomplice|title='The Sons of Sam' rethinks Berkowitz murders, and a journalist obsessed with them|website=chicago.suntimes.com|date=5 May 2021 |access-date=2021-07-10}}

Screen Rant, however, criticized the inaccuracies and omissions about Berkowitz, Satanism and Terry's life after his interview with Berkowitz.[https://screenrant.com/sons-sam-satanism-wrong-devil-worship-religion-cults/ What Sons of Sam Gets Wrong About Satanism|ScreenRant][https://screenrant.com/sons-sam-david-berkowitz-netflix-information-missing-details/ Sons of Sam: What The Netflix Documentary Leaves Out About David Berkowitz|ScreenRant]
