History
The Trumpeter was founded in 1983 at the University of Victoria.{{Cite journal|last=Hanson|first=Philip P.|date=1980|title=Alan R. Drengson|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=GIVFAAAAYAAJ&q=alan+drengson|journal=Environmental Ethics|volume=2|pages=35|isbn=9780864910806|via=}}{{Cite news|last=Todd|first=Roger|date=July 8, 1989|title=Scholars Looking For Theology of Ecology|page=H13|work=Vancouver Sun|url=https://www.newspapers.com/newspage/495375598/}} In 2001, the International Encyclopedia of the Social & Behavioral Sciences clarified that The Trumpeter was edited Alan R. Drengson from 1983 to 1997 and that "subsequently, it has continued as an on-line journal, under the editorship of Bruce Morito.”{{Cite book|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=65gYAAAAIAAJ|title=International Encyclopedia of the Social & Behavioral Sciences|publisher=Elsevier|year=2001|isbn=9780080970875|editor-last=Smelser|editor-first=Neil J.|volume=6|location=Amsterdam|pages=4043|editor-last2=Bates|editor-first2=Paul B.}} Although the Trumpeter was initially published by the University of Victoria, it is now published by Athabasca University.
Structure
Although the magazine is primarily focused on environmental philosophy, it has also published creative writing such as poetry, provided those writings employ naturalist or ecological imagery. In 1995, Warwick Fox explained that the Trumpeter "began to be numbered consecutively across issues within a volume" beginning in 1988.{{Cite book|last=Fox|first=Warwick|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=05gK9U5c3ywC|title=Toward a Transpersonal Ecology: Developing New Foundations for Environmentalism|publisher=State University of New York Press|year=1995|isbn=978-0791427767|pages=271}}
Impact
In 1990, the Institute for Research on Public Policy stated that "the academic journal The Trumpeter, published at the University of Victoria with Professor Alan Drengson as editor, offers one Canadian vehicle for continuing dissemination of scholarly work on philosophical foundations underlying environmental issues.”{{Cite book|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=AmARAQAAIAAJ|title=The Social Challenge of Global Change: A Report|publisher=Institute for Research on Public Policy|year=1990|location=Montreal|pages=39|oclc=1044593542}} In 1995, Yuichi Inoue wrote that the magazine was established "specifically to disseminate ecosophies in support of the deep ecology movement."{{Cite book |last=Inoue |first=Yuichi |title=The Deep Ecology Movement: An Introductory Anthology |publisher=North Atlantic Books |year=1995 |isbn=978-1556431982 |location=Berkeley |pages=xx |chapter=Introduction}} In 2006, Donald Edward Davis described the Trumpeter as “the principal voice of the North American Deep Ecology movement for nearly two decades.”{{Cite book|last=Davis|first=Donald Edward|title=Homeplace Geography: Essays for Appalachia|publisher=Mercer University Press|year=2006|isbn=9780881460148|pages=1}} The Trumpeter has been cited and discussed extensively in the University of North Texas' peer-reviewed academic journal Environmental Ethics.{{Cite journal|date=Summer 1985|title=News and Notes|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=uy8JAAAAIAAJ|journal=Environmental Ethics|volume=7|issue=2|page=98|doi=10.5840/enviroethics19857220}}{{efn|As of 2021, Environmental Ethics has referenced The Trumpeter 25 times.{{Cite web|title=Search results for "The Trumpeter" in Environmental Ethics|url=https://digital.library.unt.edu/explore/collections/ETHICS/browse/?q=%22the+trumpeter%22&t=fulltext&sort=date_a|language=en-US}}}}
