Gwynn was educated at the University of Oxford.[https://www.british-history.ac.uk/alumni-oxon/1500-1714/pp1277-1295 Alumni Oxonienses 1500-1714, Rokeby-Ryves] He held livings at Bowden, Cheshire, Llanrhaiadr,{{efn|The source says "Llanrhaiadr, co. Denbigh". That could refer to either Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant or Llanrhaeadr-yng-Nghinmeirch.}} Bebington and Weaverham.
