Thyrsopteris is a genus of tree fern. It contains a single living species, Thyrsopteris elegans, endemic to the Juan Fernandez Archipelago off the coast of Chile. Thyrsopteris is the only genus in the family Thyrsopteridaceae in the Pteridophyte Phylogeny Group classification of 2016 (PPG I). Alternatively, the genus may be placed in the subfamily Thyrsopteridoideae of a more broadly defined family Cyatheaceae, the family placement used in Plants of the World Online {{As of|2019|November|lc=yes}}. The oldest records of the genus are the species Thyrsopteris cretacea and Thyrsopteris cyathindusia which were described from the Burmese amber of Myanmar, dating to the Cenomanian of the Cretaceous period, around 99 million years ago.{{Cite journal|last1=Li|first1=Chunxiang|last2=Moran|first2=Robbin C.|last3=Ma|first3=Junye|last4=Wang|first4=Bo|last5=Hao|first5=Jiasheng|last6=Yang|first6=Qun|date=2020-01-01|title=A mid-Cretaceous tree fern of Thyrsopteridaceae (Cyatheales) preserved in Myanmar amber|url=http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0195667118302982|journal=Cretaceous Research|series=Non-marine and Marine Cretaceous in China: Stratigraphy, Palaeobiogeography, Palaeoecology and Palaeoclimates|language=en|volume=105|pages=104050|doi=10.1016/j.cretres.2019.01.002|bibcode=2020CrRes.10504050L |s2cid=134746241 |issn=0195-6671}}{{Cite journal|last1=Zhang|first1=Hong-Rui|last2=Shi|first2=Chao|last3=Long|first3=Xiao-Xuan|last4=Feng|first4=Qi|last5=Cai|first5=Hao-Hong|last6=Lü|first6=Ying-Tao|last7=Wang|first7=Shuo|date=2021-09-16|title=A new fossil record of Thyrsopteridaceae (Cyatheales) from the mid-Cretaceous amber of Myanmar|url=https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1871174X21000718|journal=Palaeoworld|volume=31 |issue=3 |pages=478–484 |language=en|doi=10.1016/j.palwor.2021.09.002|s2cid=240519538 |issn=1871-174X}} Other fossil species include Thyrsopteris antiqua from the Upper Cretaceous of Chile and Thyrsopteris shenii from the Paleogene of King George Island, Antarctica{{Cite journal|last1=Zhaonai|first1=Li|last2=Xiaohan|first2=Liu|last3=Ruxiang|first3=Shang|date=2009-05-29|title=The Characteristics and Mechanism of Island-Arc Volcanism on the Central and Southern Fildes Peninsula, King George Island, Antarctica|url=http://dx.doi.org/10.1111/j.1755-6724.1992.mp5001003.x|journal=Acta Geologica Sinica - English Edition|volume=5|issue=1|pages=39–57|doi=10.1111/j.1755-6724.1992.mp5001003.x|issn=1000-9515}} A thyrsopterid rachis is also known from the Upper Cretaceous of Japan.{{Cite journal |last1=Nishida |first1=Harufumi |last2=Nishida |first2=Makoto |date=September 1979 |title=Thyrsopterorachis, gen. nov., a tree fern rachis from the upper cretaceous of Hokkaido, Japan |url=http://link.springer.com/10.1007/BF02497930 |journal=The Botanical Magazine Tokyo |language=en |volume=92 |issue=3 |pages=187–195 |doi=10.1007/BF02497930 |s2cid=12138701 |issn=0006-808X}}
