Tigraynization is a sociopolitical concept of a perceived dominance of Tigrayan identity, politics and culture. Historically, Tigraynization was manifested through TPLF-led EPRDF regime since 1991 when the current constitution of Ethiopia provided equality among ethnic groups in Ethiopia. Ethiopians viewed TPLF operative as clandestine government that benefit Tigrayan people.
By 2018, TPLF lost its control after newly elected Abiy Ahmed reformed the politics and removed their leaders from the government position.{{Cite web |last=Jalata |first=Asafa |date=2020-11-19 |title=What lies behind the war in Tigray? |url=https://theconversation.com/what-lies-behind-the-war-in-tigray-150147 |access-date=2025-01-21 |website=The Conversation |language=en-US}} The dissolution of EPRDF and the creation of Prosperity Party in 2019 by merging political parties like Oromo Democratic Party (OPDO), Amhara Democratic Party (ANDM) and Southern Ethiopian People's Democratic Movement (SEPDM) clearly dubious to Tigrayan leaders by endangering their influence in the politics, leading to hostility in 2020.{{Cite web |last=Anonymous |date=2013-06-05 |title=The Common Home Great Oromia As a Win-Win Solution for The Conflict Between The Pro-Independence Oromo and The Pro-unity Amhara |url=https://zehabesha.com/the-common-home-great-oromia-as-a-win-win-solution-for-the-conflict-between-the-pro-independence-oromo-and-the-pro-unity-amhara/ |access-date=2025-01-21 |website=zehabesha.com |language=en-US}}

After the fall of the Derg regime in May 1991, TPLF-led EPRDF coalition took power which consisted of majority Tigrayans that have minority identity in the coalition.{{Cite news |date=2020-11-17 |title=Ethiopia's Tigray war: The short, medium and long story |url=https://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-54964378 |access-date=2024-10-24 }}{{Cite news |date=2020-11-15 |title=Tigray crisis viewpoint: Why Ethiopia is spiralling out of control |url=https://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-54932333 |access-date=2024-10-24 }}{{Cite web |last=newframe |date=2023-12-07 |title=Tigray has resisted Ethiopia's far greater military might for two years – here's why neither side is giving in |url=https://sociology.utk.edu/tigray-has-resisted-ethiopias-far-greater-military-might-for-two-years-heres-why-neither-side-is-giving-in/ |access-date=2025-01-21 |website=Sociology |language=en-US}}{{Cite journal |last=Ishiyama |first=John |date=2023 |title=Ethnic Identity and Conflict: The Case of Ethiopia |url=https://muse.jhu.edu/article/897696 |journal=Georgetown Journal of International Affairs |volume=24 |issue=1 |pages=12–18 |doi=10.1353/gia.2023.a897696 |issn=2471-8831}}
