Timothy R. Bedding {{post-nominals|country=AUS|FAA}} (born 21 July 1966) is an Australian astronomer known for his work on asteroseismology, the study of stellar oscillations. In particular, he contributed to the first detections of solar-like oscillations in stars such as eta Bootis, beta Hydri and alpha Centauri.{{citation | last1=Chaplin | first1=W.J. | last2=Miglio | first2=A. | title=Asteroseismology of Solar-Type and Red-Giant Stars | journal=Annual Review of Astronomy and Astrophysics | volume=51 | issue=1 | pages=353–392 |date=August 2013 | bibcode=2013ARA&A..51..353C | doi=10.1146/annurev-astro-082812-140938| arxiv=1303.1957 | s2cid=119222611 }} He also led the discovery, using data from the Kepler space telescope, that red giants oscillate in mixed modes that are directly sensitive to the core properties of the star and can be used to distinguish red giants burning helium in their cores from those that are still only burning hydrogen in a shell.{{cite journal | title = Gravity modes as a way to distinguish between hydrogen- and helium-burning red giant stars | year = 2011 | journal = Nature | volume = 471 | issue = 7340 | pages = 608–11| bibcode = 2011Natur.471..608B| doi = 10.1038/nature09935 | last1 = Bedding| first1 = Timothy R.| last2 = Mosser| first2 = Benoit| last3 = Huber| first3 = Daniel| last4 = Montalbán| first4 = Josefina| last5 = Beck| first5 = Paul| last6 = Christensen-Dalsgaard| first6 = Jørgen| last7 = Elsworth| first7 = Yvonne P.| last8 = García| first8 = Rafael A.| last9 = Miglio| first9 = Andrea| last10 = Stello| first10 = Dennis| last11 = White| first11 = Timothy R.| last12 = De Ridder| first12 = Joris| last13 = Hekker| first13 = Saskia| last14 = Aerts| first14 = Conny| last15 = Barban| first15 = Caroline| last16 = Belkacem| first16 = Kevin| last17 = Broomhall| first17 = Anne-Marie| last18 = Brown| first18 = Timothy M.| last19 = Buzasi| first19 = Derek L.| last20 = Carrier| first20 = Fabien| last21 = Chaplin| first21 = William J.| last22 = Di Mauro| first22 = Maria Pia| last23 = Dupret| first23 = Marc-Antoine| last24 = Frandsen| first24 = Søren| last25 = Gilliland| first25 = Ronald L.| last26 = Goupil| first26 = Marie-Jo| last27 = Jenkins| first27 = Jon M.| last28 = Kallinger| first28 = Thomas| last29 = Kawaler| first29 = Steven| last30 = Kjeldsen| first30 = Hans| last31 = Mathur| first31 = Savita| last32 = Noels| first32 = Arlette| last33 = Aguirre| first33 = Victor Silva| last34 = Ventura| first34 = Paolo|display-authors=1 | pmid=21455175| arxiv = 1103.5805| s2cid = 4338871 }}
