He played for two seasons for the Chicago Bears of the National Football League (NFL). Wrightman played college football for the UCLA Bruins and was drafted in the 3rd round by the Chicago Bears in the 1982 NFL draft. But a contract dispute with the Bears led him to sign with the Chicago Blitz of the United States Football League (USFL),{{cite web|url=http://lazybearranch.com/about.htm |title=Welcome to Tim Wrightman's Lazy Bear Ranch - Bird Hunting and Fishing Adventures of a Lifetime! |publisher=Lazybearranch.com |access-date=August 10, 2012}}{{cite web|url=http://usfl.info/blitz/trivia.html |title=Chicago Blitz |publisher=USFL.info |access-date=August 10, 2012}} thus making him the first NFL draft pick who signed with the now defunct USFL. He won a Super Bowl ring with the Bears in 1985, and was re-signed to a two-year deal in 1986.{{Cite web |last=Kiley |first=Mike |date=July 27, 1986 |title=Dent Back In Fold, Signs A 4-year Pact |url=https://www.chicagotribune.com/1986/07/27/dent-back-in-fold-signs-a-4-year-pact/ |access-date=August 10, 2012 |website=Chicago Tribune.}}{{Cite web |date=1986-01-27 |title=Bears Trounce Patriots, 46-10, in Super Bowl |url=https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-1986-01-27-mn-540-story.html |access-date=2023-10-31 |website=Los Angeles Times |language=en-US}}
