It tells the story of a killer who used pain relief capsules, as well as other techniques, to set off a series of poisonings. It also focuses on repressed memories and if, when and how they will come out. The protagonist is psychologist and memory expert Jim Christensen who tries to solve the case.{{cite news |last=Helfand |first=Michael |date=1997-03-06 |title=Crime novel set in Pittsburgh tosses in a kitchen sink of action |url=https://www.newspapers.com/article/pittsburgh-post-gazette/152873808/ |newspaper=Pittsburgh Post-Gazette |via=Newspapers.com |accessdate=2024-08-08 |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20240808100159/https://www.newspapers.com/article/pittsburgh-post-gazette/152873808/ |archivedate=2024-08-08 }}

Reception
Calling the book "a good creepy debut thriller", Publishers Weekly said "Downing makes a fine tortured character though the equally traumatized Christensen isn't as likable and is also plagued by Smith's many meanderings into his personal life."{{cite news |date=1997-01-27 |title=Time Release |url=https://www.publishersweekly.com/9780515120288 |magazine=Publishers Weekly |volume=244 |issue=4 |page=10 |id={{EBSCOhost|9702141882}} |accessdate=2024-08-08 |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20240808095227/https://www.publishersweekly.com/9780515120288 |archivedate=2024-08-08 }} The Missoula Independent{{'}}s Christopher Weir wrote that "Smith's prose reveals an increasingly rare commodity in popular fiction: finesse. The plot is intricate, but never confusing."{{cite news |last=Weir |first=Christopher |date=1997-03-27 |title=Smith's thriller reflects modern tamperings |url=https://www.newspapers.com/article/missoula-independent/152873764/ |newspaper=Missoula Independent |via=Newspapers.com |accessdate=2024-08-08 |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20240808095847/https://www.newspapers.com/article/missoula-independent/152873764/ |archivedate=2024-08-08 }}
