History

In March 1913, local residents requested the Queensland Government provide a school for the local area, pointing out that children were having to walk three or four miles to the school in Tinana. Local sugarcane farmer John Parke donated {{Convert|5|acre||abbr=}} of his property "Spring Grove" for the Teddington State School (as it was originally proposed to be named). It was built as an open-air school (a less-enclosed building).{{cite news |date=9 April 1913 |title=NEW STATE SCHOOL. |url=http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article150809559 |accessdate=25 January 2024 |newspaper=Maryborough Chronicle, Wide Bay and Burnett Advertiser |location=Queensland, Australia |page=5 |via=National Library of Australia |issue=12,458}}{{cite news |date=5 August 1914 |title=Advertising |url=http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article215705783 |accessdate=25 January 2024 |newspaper=The Bundaberg Mail And Burnett Advertiser |location=Queensland, Australia |page=3 |via=National Library of Australia |volume=44 |issue=5386}}{{cite news |date=2 September 1914 |title=TENDERS' ACCEPTED. |url=http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article178838552 |accessdate=25 January 2024 |newspaper=Daily Standard |location=Queensland, Australia |page=6 (SECOND EDITION) |via=National Library of Australia |issue=536}} The school was officially opened as Parke State School on 24 October 1914 by John Douglas Story, the Under-Secretary for the Department of Education. Story praised the open-air design as being both healthier for the students and cheaper for the government, as small rural schools were not always permanent due to fluctuations in the local population.{{cite news |date=26 October 1914 |title=THE NEW PARKE STATE SCHOOL. |url=http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article151014927 |accessdate=25 January 2024 |newspaper=Maryborough Chronicle, Wide Bay and Burnett Advertiser |location=Queensland, Australia |page=3 |via=National Library of Australia |issue=12,930 |archive-date=25 January 2024 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20240125213000/https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/151014927 |url-status=live }}{{cite news |date=26 October 1914 |title=Open Air Schools. |url=http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article177938414 |accessdate=25 January 2024 |newspaper=The Telegraph |location=Queensland, Australia |page=2 (SECOND EDITION) |via=National Library of Australia |issue=13,083 |archive-date=25 January 2024 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20240125212956/https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/177938414 |url-status=live }} The school admitted its first 21 students on 11 November 1914; the first teacher was Grace Smith.
