History
Melvin Simon & Associates opened Tippecanoe Mall in 1973. It was originally slated for a 1973 opening with Montgomery Ward and Detroit-based Federal's as its anchors,{{cite book |url=https://books.google.com/books?id=wn8qAQAAMAAJ&q=%22of+retail+space+including+Federal%27s+Department+Store,+Montgomery%22 |title=Chain Store Age |publisher=Lebhar Friedman |year=1972 |edition=Executives |volume=48 |access-date=2013-09-12}} although the other anchor instead became JCPenney. William H. Block Co. was added as a third anchor.
Montgomery Ward closed its store at the mall in April 1983. The same year, high winds damaged the Block store, so Block temporarily moved its merchandise to the former Montgomery Ward while its store was repaired.{{cite news |date=21 November 1983 |title=Indiana |url=https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=V7lJAAAAIBAJ&sjid=iBANAAAAIBAJ&pg=2022,1329368&dq=tippecanoe-mall+montgomery-ward&hl=en |access-date=17 October 2013 |work=The Madison Courier |pages=12 |via=Google News Archive}} By 1985, Kohl's had replaced the Montgomery Ward.{{Cite news |last=Showalter |first=Max |date=2004-06-12 |title=Dollar City moving in; Shoe Carnival hiking to new site |url=https://www.newspapers.com/article/journal-and-courier-dollar-city-moving-i/169081673/ |access-date=2025-03-29 |work=Journal and Courier |page=B6 |via=Newspapers.com}} Block's became Lazarus in 1987.
