Critical reception

Joshua Clover, in his book 1989: Bob Dylan Didn’t Have This to Sing About, called the album "vital, serious, deeply musical, with playful lyrics that come at varying speeds, sometimes blunt and heavy on the beat, sometimes syncopated and sudden, looking for a way to slip past any defense."{{Cite book|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=zagwDwAAQBAJ&dq=To+Your+Soul+the+jaz+1990&pg=PA49|title=1989: Bob Dylan Didn't Have This to Sing About|first=Joshua|last=Clover|date=October 12, 2010|publisher=Univ of California Press|isbn=9780520267879|via=Google Books}}
