The Todd Mall is a mostly pedestrian mall in Alice Springs in the Northern Territory of Australia which serves as its "main street" and is one of the primary locations for shopping and leisure in the town. It contains many of the town's restaurants.{{Cite web|url=https://traveloutbackaustralia.com/shopping-in-alice-springs.html/|title=Shopping in Alice Springs|last=Amanda|date=2012-08-20|website=Travel Outback Australia|language=en-AU|access-date=2019-11-01}}

Fortnightly, from mid-March to early December, it also hosts the "Todd Mall Markets" as well as a number of "Night Markets" throughout the year.{{Cite web|url=http://www.alicesprings.nt.gov.au/events/todd-mall-market|title=Todd Mall Markets|last=admin|date=2014-01-29|website=www.alicesprings.nt.gov.au|language=en|access-date=2019-11-01}} The Todd Mall is also the location of the Alice Springs Town Council's annual "Christmas Carnival" which features the lighting of the council's Christmas Tree on the Council Lawns.{{Cite web|title=2020 Christmas Carnival and Night Markets|url=https://alicesprings.nt.gov.au/about-alice-springs/calendar/2020-christmas-carnival-and-night-markets|access-date=2020-12-15|website=Alice Springs Town Council|language=en-AU}}

History

The Todd Mall is part of the first 104 lots of land released in the original township of Stuart which were released in 1888. From the very beginning the area now called Todd Mall, the northern section of what was then Todd Street, was considered the town's commercial centre; especially after the Stuart Arms Hotel was built (this is now the location of Alice Plaza).{{Cite book|url=https://trove.nla.gov.au/version/7086735|title=Alice Springs, the first 104 lots : a project to document the ownership and building history of the original township of Stuart, now Alice Springs, from 1888 to the present|last=Holmes|first=Kate|date=1990|publisher=[Darwin] : National Trust of Australia (Northern Territory)|language=English}}

Development

Significant developments were made to the Todd Mall in the following years:

  • 1978; it was turned into a semi-mall; with one way traffic (and it was affectionately known as the Small)
  • 1987; it became a fully pedestrian mall
  • 2013; the far northern part of the Mall was opened again to cars in an effort to revitalise the mall{{Cite web|url=https://www.alicespringsnews.com.au/2011/09/13/cars-again-in-northern-half-of-todd-mall/|title=Cars in Todd Mall again? – Alice Springs News|date=13 September 2011 |language=en-US|access-date=2019-11-01}}
