Etymology

The meanings of toi or tой in several Turkic languages are either celebration, gathering, or wedding. This is because toi music usually played at social gatherings, where toi musicians usually invited to perform in it.{{Cite journal|last=Provis|first=René|date=2015|title=Shifting social dynamics and economic inequality in the post-Soviet space: Networking and participation in toi among the novyi Kyrgyz|url=https://econpapers.repec.org/article/blaecanth/v_3a2_3ay_3a2015_3ai_3a2_3ap_3a371-384.htm|journal=Economic Anthropology|volume=2|issue=2|pages=371–384|doi=10.1002/sea2.12037|issn=2330-4847|url-access=subscription}}
