The Tokunoshima spiny rat (Tokudaia tokunoshimensis) is a rodent found only on the island of Tokunoshima in the Satsunan Islands of Japan. Due to its small habitat, it is considered endangered. It is commonly found in the secondary and primary subtropical moist broadleaf forests of this island. The karyotype has an odd diploid number, 2n = 45.{{MSW3 Muroidea | id = 13001849 | pages = 1512-1513 | heading = Tokudaia muenninki}} Like its relative T. osimensis, it is one of the few mammals that lack a Y chromosome and SRY gene.{{cite journal|vauthors=Kuroiwa A, Handa S, Nishiyama C, Chiba E, Yamada F, Abe S, Matsuda Y |title= Additional copies of CBX2 in the genomes of males of mammals lacking SRY, the Amami spiny rat (Tokudaia osimensis) and the Tokunoshima spiny rat (Tokudaia tokunoshimensis)|journal=Chromosome Research |date=2011-06-08|pages=635–644|volume=19|issue= 5|pmid=21656076|doi=10.1007/s10577-011-9223-6|s2cid= 23311263}}
