The Tom Brock Lecture is an annual scholarly lecture organised by the Australian Society for Sports History at the bequest of Australian sports historian Tom Brock.{{Cite news | title = Lessons abound in courage and defiance of past | newspaper= The Sydney Morning Herald | place = Australia | publisher = Fairfax Media | date = 22 September 2004 | url = http://www.smh.com.au/articles/2004/09/21/1095651325897.html | access-date = 16 October 2010 | archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20121107054745/http://www.smh.com.au/articles/2004/09/21/1095651325897.html | url-status = live | archive-date=7 November 2012}} The topic of the lecture is the history of rugby league football. It has been given by leading writers and academics every year since 1999, at the New South Wales Rugby League's headquarters at Phillip Street in the Sydney CBD.

David Rowe, an academic, caused some controversy when he used his 2006 lecture to question football's prospects in the future following negative off-field media coverage.{{Cite news | last = Rothfield | first = Phil | author-link=Phil Rothfield |author2=Heads, Phillip |author-link2=Phillip Heads | title = Webcke to speak his mind | newspaper= The Sunday Telegraph | place = Australia | publisher = News Limited | date = 17 December 2006 | url = http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/sport/nrl/webcke-to-speak-his-mind/story-e6frexnr-1111112699877
