Personal life

Prior to joining Newcastle United, Cairns worked as a driver.{{Cite web |title=Tom Cairns – Newcastle United and the First World War |url=http://www.footballandthefirstworldwar.org/tom-cairns-newcastle-united/ |access-date=30 December 2015 |website=Football and the First World War}} He enlisted as a gunner in the Royal Field Artillery in 1915, during the First World War. Serving in 'Z' 61st Trench Mortar Battery, he saw action at Fromelles and at the Third Battle Of Ypres and rose to the rank of corporal.{{Cite web |title=Newcastle United Footballers in the Great War |url=https://www.newmp.org.uk/parishes/newcastle-united-footballers-in-the-great-war/ |access-date=24 October 2019 |website=North East War Memorials Project}} Cairns was killed east of Arras on 13 October 1917, during the build-up to the offensive on Cambrai.
