Life and work
O'Shea was born in Valentia Island off the Iveragh Peninsula in County Kerry, Ireland{{cite web|first1=Andrew|last1=Lynch|accessdate=2020-12-23|title=Image conscious: the photographs of Tony O'Shea|url=https://www.businesspost.ie/life-arts/image-conscious-the-photographs-of-tony-oshea-b251c598|website=Business Post}} and lived there for 20 years.{{cite web|accessdate=2020-12-24|title=The Light of Day|url=https://www.galleryofphotography.ie/the-light-of-day|website=Gallery of Photography Ireland}} He studied English and Philosophy at University College Dublin. From 1981 he worked full-time as a photographer with In Dublin magazine.
