Early life and education
Awotona was born in Lagos, Nigeria. His father was a microbiologist and entrepreneur; his mother worked at the local bank. When Awotona was 12 years old, his father was killed in a carjacking, convincing his mother, with Awotona and his three brothers, to later leave Lagos, migrate to the US, and reside in the Atlanta, Georgia, area. Although he graduated from high school two years early and was provided a scholarship to a US college at 15 years old, his mother decided he was too young and required Awotona to first attend Wheeler High School for its junior and senior years. Awotona said, “It was super frustrating. I felt like I was wasting time because I had my plan in place.”{{cite web |title=Tope Awotona - A Founder Story|last=Houghton|first=Karen|date=26 April 2018 |url=https://www.atlantatechvillage.com/buzz/tope-awotona-a-founder-story |website=atlantatechvillage.com |publisher=Atlanta Tech Village |access-date=5 March 2025}} Nevertheless, the two years helped him to assimilate and learn the culture while he planned to continue his father's legacy of entrepreneurship.{{Cite web |last=Ngozi |first=Nwanji |date=October 12, 1023 |title=How Tope Awotona Catapulted Calendly To A Billion-Dollar Company After Making It His Mission To Complete His Late Father’s Work |url=https://www.msn.com/en-us/money/news/how-tope-awotona-catapulted-calendly-to-a-billion-dollar-company-after-making-it-his-mission-to-complete-his-late-father-s-work/ar-AA1i7iSz |website=MSN}} He attended the University of Georgia, initially majoring in Computer Science, he later changed to Business Management Information Systems{{cite web |title=Who is the CEO of Calendly? |url=https://www.clay.com/dossier/calendly-ceo#: |website=clay.com |publisher=Clay |access-date=5 March 2025}} and graduated from Georgia's Terry College of Business with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in 2002.{{cite web |title=Calendly founder learned to persevere through trial and error |url=https://www.terry.uga.edu/calendly-founder-learned-persevere-through-trial-and-error/ |website=terry.uga.edu |publisher=University of Georgia |access-date=5 March 2025}}{{Cite news |date=2024-02-01 |title=Tope Awotona, 42-year-old richest US-based Nigerian who owns $3bn tech company |url=https://www.vanguardngr.com/2024/02/tope-awotona-42-year-old-richest-us-based-nigerian-who-owns-3bn-tech-company/ |access-date=2024-04-30 |work=Vanguard}} His ethnicity is Yoruba.{{Cite web |title=Why The Yoruba Are Successful Wherever They Go – THISDAYLIVE |url=https://www.thisdaylive.com/index.php/2022/12/20/why-the-yoruba-are-successful-wherever-they-go/ |access-date=2024-07-31 |website=www.thisdaylive.com}}
