Torbrex Village

Torbrex is an area in the southwest of Stirling, Scotland, which developed around a small weaving village.{{cite book|title=Stirling: The Royal Burgh|last=Mair|first=Craig|publisher=John Donald|date=1990|isbn=0859762726|page=158}}

The Wordie family had a significant influence on this area, building Williamsfield House in 1682 which still stands near the current site of St Ninians Primary School and Torbrex House in 1721.{{cite web |author=Gazetteer for Scotland|title=Torbrex, Stirling|date=2021|website=Gazetteer for Scotland|url=https://www.scottish-places.info/towns/townfirst839.html|access-date=16 March 2025}} Thomas Wordie established a carrier business in Stirling in 1745{{cite book|last=Smith|first=Robin|date=2001|title=The Making of Scotland|publisher=Canongate|pages=858-859|isbn=1841951706}}{{cite book|last=Paget-Tomlinson|first=Edward|title=The railway carriers : the history of Wordie & Co, carriers, hauliers and store keepers|publisher=Terence Dalton|date=1990|isbn=0861380827|pages=16-18}} which grew to operate across Scotland in collaboration with the railways, delivering goods from rail stations to their final destinations.

On the south side of Torbrex Road a later substantial Torbrex House with grounds{{cite web |author=Ordnance Survey|title=Stirlingshire XVII.7|date=1896|website=National Library of Scotland Map Images|url=https://maps.nls.uk/view/82905741|access-date=16 March 2025}} was constructed in 1883 for Sheriff James Buntine (1841-1920),{{cite news |work=Stirling Observer|date=27 December 1883|page=4|title=New buildings and improvements}} who lived there with his wife until his death.{{cite news |work=Stirling Observer|date=10 August 1920|page=5|title=Death of Sheriff Buntine}} His widow continued to live there until at least 1932, and died in 1938. The house was subsequently converted to flats by Stirling Burgh Council but was badly damaged by fire in 1964.{{cite news |work=Stirling Observer|date=1 September 1964|page=7|title=Torbrex blaze}} It was subsequently demolished and the site redeveloped as part of new housing at Coxet Hill - only a small part of the northern boundary wall remains.

New areas of housing in Stirling were developed to the north and south of the village from the 1950s onwards, including Torbrex Farm, and the wider area is referred to as Torbrex. Stirling High School has been situated in Torbrex since 1962. In 2008 it relocated to the site vacated by the cricket club, and its previous site immediately to the north has been developed as housing.

The oldest bones of a human from the Stirling area have been named "Torbrex Tam" by archaeologists and were found nearby in Coneypark in 2017.
