History

From 2001 to 2012, Hobby Star Marketing, Inc. (who also ran Fan Expo Canada) held fall, spring, and winter one-day comic book conventions called the Toronto ComiCON at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. From 2004 to 2011, the spring event was referred to as the "Fan Appreciation Event" and included free admission held in conjunction with participating Toronto-area comic book stores such as the Silver Snail. Since 2007 the annual spring Toronto Comicon has been a multi-day event, in 2012 it expanded to incorporate the annual March Toronto AnimeCon (MTAC).

Beginning in 2012, the Toronto Comicon format underwent extensive restructuring has now become a three-day event that "[boasts] unique exhibitors, presentations, workshops and many celebrity guests."{{Cite web|title = ABOUT US {{!}} Toronto Comicon|url = http://comicontoronto.com/about-us/|website = comicontoronto.com|access-date = 2016-02-03}}

Since the changes, the convention has attracted more high-profile guests and attendance rates have increased, therefore making it a key competitor to Toronto Comic Con.{{Cite web|title = What to expect at Toronto Comicon 2015|url = http://www.blogto.com/sports_play/2015/03/what_to_expect_at_toronto_comicon_2015/|website = blogTO|access-date = 2016-02-03}}{{Cite web|url = http://toronto.ctvnews.ca/toronto-comicon-2015-1.2291119|title = Toronto Comicon 2015}}

The 2020 and 2021 editions of the event were cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.{{Cite web|title = Event cancellations and closures amid COVID-19 outbreak|url = https://www.cp24.com/news/event-cancellations-and-closures-amid-covid-19-outbreak-1.4850173|website = cp24.com|access-date = 2020-03-14}}{{Cite web|title = COVID-19 update|url = https://twitter.com/FANEXPOCANADA/status/1238534148983345153|website = twitter.com|access-date = 2020-03-14}}{{cite tweet| user=FANEXPOCANADA| number=1349008248255492096| title=An update on Toronto Comicion 2021| date=January 12, 2021| author=FANEXPO Canada| url-status=live| archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20210112191927/https://twitter.com/FANEXPOCANADA/status/1349008248255492096| archive-date=January 12, 2021}}{{cite web| url=https://fanexpohq.com/comicontoronto/| title=Toronto Comicon - COVID-19 Update| url-status=live| archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20210112193005/https://fanexpohq.com/comicontoronto/| archive-date=January 12, 2021| access-date=January 12, 2021| website=fanexpohq.com}}
