History
In June 1974, a proposal by Toronto Symphony board member John McDougall for a youth orchestra under the Toronto Symphony received funding and support from the board. During its first season, Victor Feldbrill was chosen as the first music director of the TSYO. On February 2, 1975, the inaugural concert of the TSYO was performed in the MacMillan Theatre at the University of Toronto Faculty of Music.{{Cite book |author=Warren |first=Richard |url=http://worldcat.org/oclc/1013946629 |title=Begins with the Oboe : A History of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra |publisher=University of Toronto Press |year=2016 |isbn=978-1-4426-7123-2 |oclc=1013946629}}
In the summer of 1985, the TSYO toured in Europe. The orchestra performed in the Netherlands, England, and Scotland; the tour began at the International Festival of Youth Orchestras in Aberdeen, Scotland. The tour ended at the London Youth Festival, where the TSYO was the only non-British youth orchestra invited to the festival. The tour was planned to coincide with the United Nations' International Year of Youth.TSYO TOUR 1985. Document. From Internal Toronto Symphony Archives (accessed June 21, 2022).
