It is used on a variety of sizes of rear- and all-wheel drive automobiles, ranging from compact to full-sized executive.

In 2018, the N platform was replaced by the Toyota New Global Architecture TNGA-L platform.{{cite press release |title=Toyota Rolls Out Completely Redesigned Crown |date=2018-06-26 |publisher=Toyota |location=Japan |url=https://newsroom.toyota.co.jp/en/toyota/23102775.html |access-date=2018-07-02}}{{cite news |title=Toyota Launches All-New Crown In Japan With Connected Features As Standard |first=Michael |last=Karkafiris |work=Carscoops |date=2018-06-26 |url=https://www.carscoops.com/2018/06/toyota-launches-new-crown-japan-connected-features-standard/ |access-date=2018-06-28}}
