Critical reception

Billy Dukes of Taste of Country gave the song a favorable review, writing that Bush's "first crack at solo success is no less of a ray of sunshine than any of [Sugarland]’s most contagious cuts," though "he separates himself as an artist." Dukes added that "the song’s message is easy to embrace" and "Bush’s voice sounds good on country radio."{{cite news|last1=Dukes|first1=Billy|title=Kristian Bush, ‘Trailer Hitch’ – ToC Critic’s Pick [Listen]|url=http://tasteofcountry.com/kristian-bush-trailer-hitch/|accessdate=December 5, 2014|work=Taste of Country|date=July 31, 2014}} Kevin John Coyne of Country Universe gave the song a B+ grade, writing that "it’s a light, breezy song with great charm, and he sings it with the appropriate combination of conviction and good spirit." He also stated that "Kristian Bush’s first solo single has more personality, more substance, and is more thoroughly entertaining in the way we expect Sugarland to be than what we’ve heard so far from Jennifer Nettles."{{cite news|last1=Coyne|first1=Kevin John|title=Single Review: Kristian Bush, "Trailer Hitch"|url=http://www.countryuniverse.net/2014/07/03/single-review-kristian-bush-trailer-hitch/|accessdate=December 5, 2014|work=Country Universe|date=July 3, 2014}} USA Today named the song their "song of the week" on July 29, 2014, with Brian Mansfield calling it "the antithesis of the conspicuous consumption that seems so much a part of contemporary country music" and "Jason Mraz with a little steel guitar."{{cite news|last1=Mansfield|first1=Brian|authorlink1=Brian Mansfield|title=Song of the week: Kristian Bush, 'Trailer Hitch'|url=https://www.usatoday.com/story/life/music/2014/07/28/kristian-bush-song-of-the-week-trailer-hitch/13293361/|accessdate=December 5, 2014|work=USA Today|date=July 29, 2014}}
