The Würzburg tramway network ({{langx|de|Straßenbahnnetz Würzburg}}) is a network of tramways forming part of the public transport system in Würzburg, a city in the federal state of Bavaria, Germany.
The network currently consists of five lines, with a total track length of {{convert|42|km|mi}} (yielding a one-way route length of approximately {{convert|21|km|mi}}). It is operated by Würzburger Straßenbahn GmbH, a subsidiary of {{interlanguage link|Würzburger Versorgungs- und Verkehrs-GmbH|de}} (WVV), and as of 1 January 2025, is integrated in the {{interlanguage link|Nahverkehr Mainfranken|de}} (NVM) transport association. Before then, it was integrated in one of NVM's predecessors, the {{interlanguage link|Verkehrsverbund Mainfranken|lt=Verkehrsunternehmens-Verbund Mainfranken|de}} (VVM).{{cite web |title=WVV im neuen Verbund NVM |url=https://www.wvv.de/mobil-b2c/nvm/ |website=Würzburger Versorgungs- und Verkehrs-GmbH |access-date=1 January 2025 |language=de}}
History
The first horse-drawn tramway opened in Würzburg in 1892.{{cite web |url=http://www.wvv.de/de/home/nahverkehr/nahverkehr_privatkunden/nahverkehr_p_wissenswertes/wissenswertes_p_strassenbahn/strassenbahn_1.jsp |title=Nahverkehr - Fahrgäste - Wissenswertes - Straßenbahn der WSB - Übersicht |publisher=Würzburger Versorgungs- und Verkehrs-GmbH (WVV) |language=de |trans-title=Suburban Traffic - Passengers - Things worth knowing - The Tram of the WSB - Overview |access-date=2013-10-04}}{{cite web |url=http://www.wvv.de/de/home/unternehmen/ueber_uns/historie/historie_1.jsp |title=Über uns - Historie - Übersicht |publisher=Würzburger Versorgungs- und Verkehrs-GmbH (WVV) |language=de |trans-title=About us - History - Overview |access-date=2013-10-04}} The first electric trams went into operation in Würzburg in 1900.
Beginning in the 1990s, a concerted effort was made to move Würzburg's tram lines into their own rights-of-way and convert them more to a light rail (Stadtbahn) type of operation over the traditional tram system operating in regular road traffic. Currently, most of Würzburg tram lines, outside of sections downtown and in the Sanderau district, operate as light rail in their own rights-of-way. In addition, low-floor light rail vehicles were purchased.
Lines
{{As of|2013}}, the network was made up of the following five lines:{{cite web |url=http://www.vvm-info.de/vvm/de/information/linieninformationen/grosswabe_wuerzburg/grosswabe_wuerzburg.jsp |title=Linieninformationen - Großwabe Würzburg |publisher=Verkehrsunternehmens-Verbund Mainfranken GmbH (VVM) |language=de |trans-title=Line Information - (in) the Würzburg 'honeycomb' |access-date=2013-10-04 |archive-date=2016-06-22 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20160622030121/http://www.vvm-info.de/vvm/de/information/linieninformationen/grosswabe_wuerzburg/grosswabe_wuerzburg.jsp |url-status=dead }}{{cite web |url=http://www.vvm-info.de/vvm/media/files/liniennetzplaene/13022_lnp_wuerzburg_straba_din_a4_hoch_10_09_30.pdf |title=Liniennetz der Straßenbahn in Würzburger |publisher=Verkehrsunternehmens-Verbund Mainfranken GmbH (VVM) |language=de |trans-title=Tram Line Network in Würzburg |date=September 2010 |access-date=2013-10-04 |archive-date=2016-05-20 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20160520215124/http://www.vvm-info.de/vvm/media/files/liniennetzplaene/13022_lnp_wuerzburg_straba_din_a4_hoch_10_09_30.pdf |url-status=dead }}
