Transfermarkt is a German-based{{cite web|url=http://safeweb.norton.com/report/show?url=http:%2F%2Fwww.transfermarkt.co.uk%2F&product=N360&version=20.3.1.22&layout=Retail&lang=0901&source=toolbar |title=Report for transfermarkt.co.uk | Norton Safe Web |publisher=Safeweb.norton.com |access-date=26 May 2013}} website owned by Axel Springer SE that has footballing information, such as scores, results, statistics, transfer news, and fixtures.{{cite web|url=http://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/ |title=The Football Portal for the Premier League and Transfer Rumour Forum |publisher=transfermarkt.co.uk |access-date=26 May 2013}} According to the IVW, it is in the top 25 most visited German websites, and one of the largest sport websites after kicker.de.{{cite web | url = http://meedia.de/internet/online-ivw-sport-gewinnt-news-verliert/2010/09/08.html | title= Online-IVW: Sport gewinnt, News verliert |trans-title=Online-IVW: Sport wins, News loses | publisher = meedia.de | date = 8 September 2010 | access-date = 27 July 2013 | first = Jens | last = Schröder}}

The website has scores, results, transfer news, fixtures, and player values. Despite the player values, along with some other facts, being estimates,{{cite web | url = http://www.spiegel.de/sport/fussball/bundesliga-transfers-magie-des-pinkepinke-plans-a-710056.html | title = Bundesliga-Transfers: Magie des Pinkepinke-Plans |trans-title=Bundesliga transfers: Magic of the dough plan | language = de | publisher = Spiegel Online | date = 6 August 2010 | access-date = 26 July 2013 | first = Peter | last = Ahrens}} researchers from the Centre for Economic Performance have found that the "rumours" of player transfers are largely accurate.{{cite web | url = http://cep.lse.ac.uk/pubs/download/dp0948.pdf | title = The Returns to Scarce Talent: Footedness and Player Remuneration in European Soccer | publisher = cep.lse.ac.uk | date = September 2009 | access-date = 26 July 2013 | first1 = Alex | last1 = Bryson | first2 = Bernd | last2 = Frick | first3 = Rob | last3 = Simmons}}

These estimated player values are usually updated every few months, considering how the association football market works,{{explain|date=February 2025}} these estimates might be slightly lower or higher than what a players' current form and therefore current value might suggest.

History

The website was founded in May 2000, by Matthias Seidel to track players and transfer targets for SV Werder Bremen before expanding to other teams. The website initially focused on players, but gradually expanded to include managers, agents, and other staff.{{cite news |last=Smith |first=Rory |authorlink=Rory Smith (journalist) |date=12 August 2021 |title=The Wisdom of the Crowd |url=https://www.nytimes.com/2021/08/12/sports/soccer/soccer-football-transfermarkt.html |work=The New York Times |accessdate=12 August 2021|url-access=subscription}} In 2008, Axel Springer publishing house acquired a 51% share in the website. Seidel kept the other 49% of the shares.{{cite web | url = http://www.axelspringer.de/presse/Axel-Springer-uebernimmt-Mehrheit-an-Deutschlands-groesster-Fussball-Community_251509.html |title = Axel Springer übernimmt Mehrheit an Deutschlands größter Fußball-Community |trans-title=Axel Springer acquires majority stake in Germany's biggest football community | publisher = meedia.de | date = 23 September 2008 | access-date = 27 July 2013}} The English-language version started in 2009.

In 2010, IVW ranked it among the 25 most visited German websites, and one of the biggest sports sites after Kicker.{{Cite web|url=http://meedia.de/internet/online-ivw-sport-gewinnt-news-verliert/2010/09/08.html|title=Online-IVW: Sport wins, News loses|date=2010-09-08|access-date=2013-07-27|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20110825165818/http://meedia.de/internet/online-ivw-sport-gewinnt-news-verliert/2010/09/08.html|archive-date=2011-08-25}}

On 19 May 2014, a relaunch took place for the so-called update to 'version 4'. In the course of this update there were both server-technical as well as data-legal issues, as private data was visible to other users for an indefinite period of time.{{cite web | url = http://www.tz.de/sport/fussball/transfermarkt-de-daten-leck-nach-relaunch-3570964.html | title = Daten-Leck bei Transfermarkt.de |trans-title=Data leak on Transfermarkt.de | language = de | publisher = TZ.de | date = 20 May 2014 | access-date = 23 July 2014 | first = Armin | last = Linder}} For 48 hours the site had only a very limited availability, resulting in multiple complaints on Facebook.{{cite web | url = http://www.watson.ch/Front/articles/477674190-Am-Montag-lancierte-%C2%ABTransfermarkt%C2%BB-seine-neue-Website.-Dabei-ging-schief%2C-was-schief-gehen-konnte.-Sogar-private-Nachrichten-waren-pl%C3%B6tzlich-f%C3%BCr-andere-einsehbar%C2%A0 | title = Am Montag lancierte "Transfermarkt" seine neue Website.
