Transitions is the first full-colour 3D IMAX film, created for the Canada Pavilion at Expo 86, co-directed by Colin Low and Tony Ianzelo and produced by the National Film Board of Canada. It was built upon We Are Born of Stars created for Expo '85 in Tskuba, Japan, which used anaglyph 3D. The film is also notable for the first use of stereoscopic computer animation.{{cite news | url=http://www.mormonstoday.com/001222/A2Low01.shtml | title=Lethbridge Herald article in Mormon News | date=14 December 2000 | accessdate=June 12, 2012}}{{cite web | title=The NFB and World Fairs, pt. 3: Vancouver and Expo 86 | publisher=National Film Board of Canada | work=NFB.ca Blog | url=http://blog.nfb.ca/2010/07/16/the-nfb-and-world-fairs-pt-3-vancouver-and-expo-86/|date=16 July 2010 | accessdate=June 12, 2012 | author=St-Pierre, Marc}}

Production

Canadian National, the main sponsor of the Canada Pavilion, asked the NFB to produce a film about transportation in Canada, in keeping with the fair's theme “Transportation and Communications”.

The film's computer animation sequence was produced by the Centre d'animatique unit of the NFB's French animation studio, credited to Daniel Langlois, shortly before he left the NFB to found Softimage.{{cite web |title=Transitions |url=https://collection.nfb.ca/film/transitions-en |archive-url= |archive-date= |work=National Film Board of Canada collection}}{{cite book | title=Canadian film technology, 1896-1986 | publisher=University of Delaware Press | author=Graham, Gerald G. | year=1989 | isbn=978-0874133479 | url=https://books.google.com/books?id=lKKoJqjVn6QC&q=robert+forget+nfb&pg=PA237 | page=237}}

Projection

Transitions was projected on a {{convert|70|by|50|ft|adj=on}} screen at the pavilion's CN IMAX Theatre, to over 1.75 million people, during a six-month run.
