A trikini is a three-piece garment used as beachwear. The name is formed from bikini, (itself named for Bikini Atoll) replacing "bi-", as if to mean "two", with "tri-", meaning "three".Robert L. Chapman & Harold Wentworth, New Dictionary of American Slang, p. 446, Harper & Row, 1986, {{ISBN|0-06-181157-2}}. Some different interpretations of this bikini variant have appeared over the years.
In the 1960s, fashion designers combined pasties and briefs to create the first trikini.{{cite book|title=The Visual Dictionary of Fashion Design|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=8VIy6WfYSEwC&pg=PA180|first1=Gavin|last1=Ambrose|first2=Paul|last2=Harris|publisher=AVA Publishing|date=2007|isbn=9782940373611|page=180}} It appeared briefly in 1967, described as "a handkerchief and two small saucers." In the early 2000s the term trikini was revived for the string bikini – a bikini bottom combined with a stringed halterneck bikini top that has two triangular pieces of cloth to cover the breasts.{{cite book|first=William|last=Safire|title=No Uncertain Terms|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=Pj2MsS3v0DYC&pg=PA291|page=291|publisher=Simon & Schuster|year=2004|isbn=0-7432-5812-6}} This style of trikini was used by Dolce & Gabbana in their 2005 Milan show, in a design where "the three pieces of scintillating sequined fabric, barely cover the essentials".{{cite news|agency=Associated Press|url=http://www.theage.com.au/articles/2004/06/28/1088392608125.html|title=Free and easy|newspaper=The Age|location=Australia|date=29 June 2004}}
In some cases the term trikini is used for a set of three items of clothing sold together, such as a bikini with a tank top or a bikini with a one-piece swimsuit.{{cite news|first=John|last=Karl|url=http://www.accessmylibrary.com/coms2/summary_0286-27747407_ITM|title=Under cover Designers are wrapping swimsuits with stylish designs|newspaper=Sarasota Herald Tribune|date=8 February 2000|access-date=28 April 2020|archive-date=12 January 2009|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20090112081550/http://www.accessmylibrary.com/coms2/summary_0286-27747407_ITM|url-status=dead}} For their 2007 Milan show Dolce & Gabbana presented a trikini consisting of a conventional two-piece bikini with a band of rhinestones around the waist.{{cite web|first=Katia|last=Dolmadjian|url=http://lifestyle.iafrica.com/fashion/fashion_features/594814.htm|url-status=dead|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20090204034813/http://lifestyle.iafrica.com/fashion/fashion_features/594814.htm|archive-date=4 February 2009|title=The hottest trends from Milan|website=iAfrica|date=28 September 2007}}
