Tristan Demetrius (born 8 February 2005) is a Haitian professional footballer who currently plays as a forward for Costa Rican side Alajuelense.
Early life
Born in the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince, Demetrius' father died when he was three years old.{{cite web|url=https://www.nacion.com/puro-deporte/futbol-nacional/el-nuevo-talento-haitiano-de-saprissa-habla-cuatro/YOMNKSRGXJF6RE4UYKPNVQOMNE/story/|title=El nuevo talento haitiano de Saprissa habla cuatro idiomas y tuvo la opción de fichar con Alajuelense|trans-title=Saprissa's new Haitian talent speaks four language and had the option to sign with Alajuelense|first=Cristian|last=Brenes|date=5 January 2021|access-date=28 July 2023|website=nacion.com|language=es|url-access=subscription}} His mother, Djalanta Brun, worked for the Haitian government in various embassies, and because of this, Demetrius left Haiti as a child, living in Belgium and the Dominican Republic. As a result he is multilingual, speaking Dutch, English, French and Spanish. In 2018, he moved to Costa Rica, the country where his maternal uncle, Anghedon Huguens Brun, had played football for Turrialba and Carmelita, as well as being capped by the Haitian national team.{{cite web|url=https://www.nacion.com/puro-deporte/futbol-nacional/debut-de-tristan-demetrius-con-saprissa-provoco-el/6DSDAIS43RE2DPIZ62GXT6K2NE/story/|title=Debut de Tristan Demetrius con Saprissa provocó el apoyo y felicidad de un aficionado liguista|trans-title=Tristan Demetrius's debut with Saprissa provoked the support and happiness of a league fan|first=Fiorella|last=Masis|date=17 September 2021|access-date=28 July 2023|website=nacion.com|language=es}}
Club career
Initially settling in Cartago, Demetrius trialled with local side Cartaginés, but was ultimately not offered a place in their academy. His other uncle, Shmerley Brun, took him to trial with both Deportivo Saprissa and Alajuelense on the same day, with both clubs showing interest in him. He went on to join the former in 2020, signing a professional contract in December of the same year, at the age of fifteen.{{cite web|url=https://www.nacion.com/puro-deporte/futbol-nacional/saprissa-le-abrio-puerta-a-jovencito-haitiano-de/K6PLNYWLOFEVTIGRLTJ5RCLE3U/story/|title=Saprissa le abrió puerta Tristan Demetrius, jovencito haitiano de 15 años, y él se metió hasta la cocina: el plantel de Wálter Centeno|trans-title=Saprissa opened the door for Tristan Demetrius, a 15-year-old Haitian boy, and he went into the kitchen: the Walter Centeno campus|first=Esteban|last=Valverde|date=27 December 2020|access-date=28 July 2023|website=nacion.com|language=es|url-access=subscription}}{{cite web|url=https://www.haititempo.com/foot-costa-rica-les-debuts-de-tristan-demetrius-en-championnat-avec-le-deportivo-saprissa/|title=Foot – Costa Rica : Les débuts de Tristan Demetrius en championnat avec le Deportivo Saprissa !|trans-title=Foot – Costa Rica: The debut of Tristan Demetrius in the league with Deportivo Saprissa!|first=Childo|last=Geffrard|date=17 September 2021|access-date=28 July 2023|website=haititempo.com|language=fr}} Eight months after signing, he extended his deal with the club.{{cite web|url=https://www.nacion.com/puro-deporte/futbol-nacional/saprissa-evita-generar-presion-sobre-una-de-sus/SZFJGPPOGFBFBG4TEBANR76SXA/story/|title=Saprissa evita generar presión sobre una de sus promesas de 16 años|trans-title=Saprissa avoids putting pressure on one of his 16-year-old promises|first=Fiorella|last=Masis|date=11 August 2021|access-date=28 July 2023|website=nacion.com|language=es|url-access=subscription}} He made his professional debut with the side on 16 September 2021, playing sixty minutes in a 1–1 draw with Guanacasteca before being replaced by David Ramírez.
Towards the end of the 2022–23 season, Saprissa announced that they had not ruled out selling Demetrius, who had attracted attention from Belgian Pro League side Gent, having trialled with the side in early 2023.{{cite web|url=https://www.nacion.com/puro-deporte/futbol-nacional/saprissa-lo-hizo-vendio-a-su-joya-goleadora/RKG3TWZBS5E55LR3R3VQJ2M4RI/story/|title=Saprissa lo hizo: Vendió a su ‘joya goleadora’|trans-title=Saprissa did it: They sold their 'scoring jewel'|first=Milton|last=Montenegro|date=3 April 2023|access-date=28 July 2023|website=nacion.com|language=es}}{{cite web|url=https://www.footnews.be/news/364719/gand-a-trouve-un-nouveau-joyau|title="Gand a trouvé un nouveau joyau"|trans-title="Gent has found a new gem"|date=4 April 2023|access-date=28 July 2023|website=footnews.be|language=fr}} He had not featured at all during the season, due to league rules stating that Costa Rican clubs could only have four registered foreign players, and Saprissa already had Argentine Mariano Torres, Cuban Luis Paradela, Jamaican Javon East and Panamanian Fidel Escobar registered.
On 26 July 2023, Gent confirmed that they had signed Demetrius, stating that he had already trained with the youth team, but had been unable to join in February 2023 due to his age.{{cite web|url=https://www.kaagent.be/nl/nieuws/27-07-2023/jong-kaa-gent-verwelkomt-vier-nieuwe-spelers|title=Jong KAA Gent verwelkomt vier nieuwe spelers|trans-title=Jong KAA Gent welcomes four new players|date=26 July 2023|access-date=28 July 2023|website=kaagent.be|language=nl}}
