The Trittau village dates back to the 12th century. It was first mentioned in 1167 in a document of Duke Henry the Lion.{{cite web|title=Monumenta Germaniae Historica 500–1500 Die Urkunden Heinrichs des Löwen Herzogs von Sachsen und Bayern|periodical=|publisher=Bayerische Staatsbibliothek digital|url=https://daten.digitale-sammlungen.de/0000/bsb00000465/images/index.html?fip=193.174.98.30&id=00000465&seite=171|accessdate=2022-11-19|last=|date=1941|language=German|pages=111|quote=}} In those days it was situated close to the Hamburg - Rostock and Hamburg - Lübeck trade routes.
The village then consisted of a Saxon part (Groß-Trittau) and a Wagrian part (Klein-Trittau). In 1326, a castle was built to defend the region and the trade route against the Scarpenberg knights from nearby Linau castle.
