Background
Wariner told Billboard in 1999 that he did not write the song until the album was near completion. He said that co-writer Bill Anderson suggested the opening line of "two teardrops floating down the river."{{cite magazine|last=Bessman|first=Jim|date=10 April 1999|title=Wariner Follows High-Rising 'Heaven' with Capitol's 'Teardrops'|magazine=Billboard|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=6QwEAAAAMBAJ&q=%22steve+wariner%22+%22two+teardrops%22&pg=PA31}}
