The Type 004 aircraft carrier is a supercarrier of the People's Liberation Army Navy's aircraft carrier programme being constructed since 2024.{{Cite web |date=2024-03-06 |title=Amid Taiwan tensions, Beijing reveals it is building aircraft carrier No 4 |url=https://www.scmp.com/news/china/military/article/3254415/chinas-aircraft-carrier-no-4-track-no-technical-bottleneck-admiral-reveals-first-official |access-date=2025-04-18 |website=South China Morning Post |language=en}} Like the Type 003 Fujian it will feature an integrated electric propulsion system that will allow the operation of electromagnetic catapults.{{cite web |url=http://nationalinterest.org/blog/the-buzz/the-real-reason-the-world-needs-pay-attention-chinas-growing-20406 |title=The Real Reason the World Needs to Pay Attention to China's Growing Aircraft Carrier Fleet |last=Roblin |first=Sebastien |date=1 May 2017 |publisher=Center for the National Interest |website=The National Interest |access-date=19 June 2018}}

Unlike the conventionally-powered Type 003 Fujian, the Type 004 will be much larger and also the first Chinese carrier to feature nuclear marine propulsion.{{cite web |url=https://foxtrotalpha.jalopnik.com/inside-china-s-plan-to-build-the-second-biggest-aircraf-1828730033 |title=Inside China's Plan to Build the Second-Biggest Aircraft Carrier Fleet in the World |website=Foxtrot Alpha |publisher=Jalopnik |last1=Mizokami |first1=Kyle |date=7 September 2018 |access-date=7 September 2018}} In 2017, China hoped to complete the carrier by the late 2020s, and indicated that up to four might be built.{{Cite web|url=http://globalriskinsights.com/2017/06/chinas-aircraft-carrier-naval-defence/|title = What China's Aircraft Carrier Means for its Naval Defence Capabilities | GRI|date = 2 June 2017}}

In 2017, China's central government was reportedly ready to spend RMB 22 billion (US$3.3 billion) on the development of two prototype molten salt nuclear reactors to be built at Wuwei in Gansu province. The goal then was to have the reactors operational by 2020. The PLA Navy is interested in the technology to power warships including aircraft carriers.{{cite news |url=http://www.scmp.com/news/china/society/article/2122977/china-hopes-cold-war-nuclear-energy-tech-will-power-warships |title=China hopes cold war nuclear energy tech will power warships, drones |quote=Chen Fu, a thermal physicist at the Harbin Institute of Technology involved in the development of new power generation systems for China’s navy, said the heat generated by a thorium molten salt reactor could be perfect to help generate power on a warship. |date=5 December 2017 |access-date=19 June 2018 |last=Chen |first=Stephen |work=South China Morning Post}}{{update after|2020}}

= Aircraft=

The Type 004 carrier could carry a complement of carrier-ready J-15 and J-35 fighters, Xian KJ-600 airborne early warning and control aircraft, anti-submarine warfare aircraft, and stealth attack-drones.{{cite news |last1=Lin |first1=Jeffrey Lin |last2=Singer |first2=P.W. |date=6 March 2018 |title=A Chinese shipbuilder accidentally revealed its major navy plans |url=https://www.popsci.com/china-nuclear-submarine-aircraft-carrier-leak |access-date=19 June 2018 |work=Popular Science}}

It was previously suggested that the aircraft carrier might carry J-20 stealth-fighter aircraft.{{cite news |last1=Lin |first1=Jeffrey Lin |last2=Singer |first2=P.W. |date=16 August 2017 |title=China's making major progress with its aircraft carrier tech |url=https://www.popsci.com/china-aircraft-carrier-technology |access-date=11 November 2017 |work=Popular Science}} However, in a programme in 2017 on China Central Television, retired PLAN Rear Admiral Zhang Zhaozhong dismissed the possibility that the J-20 aircraft would be used on aircraft carriers as the aircraft was not structurally designed to cope with carrier operations.{{cite news |date=24 November 2017 |title=PLA admiral rejects talk of J-20 fighters on aircraft carriers |url=https://asiatimes.com/article/pla-admiral-rejects-talk-j-20-fighters-aircraft-carriers/ |access-date=19 June 2018 |work=Asia Times}} In addition, the plane does not have folding wings for compact storage, and its stealth coating would be susceptible to degradation while at sea.

History

=Construction=

In November 2024, reports were published that China was in the process of building a land-based prototype nuclear reactor for a large surface warship.{{Cite web |date=2024-11-11 |title=China advances toward nuclear-powered aircraft carrier with new reactor prototype |url=https://www.foxnews.com/world/china-advances-toward-nuclear-powered-aircraft-carrier-new-reactor-prototype |access-date=2025-04-18 |website=Associated Press |language=en-US}} According to Associated Press, and based on new analysis of satellite imagery and Chinese government documents, this was a clear sign that China was starting to produce its first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier. The Middlebury Institute of International Studies in California was reported to have said that a mountain site outside the city of Leshan in the southwest Chinese province of Sichuan was the place where the prototype reactor was being developed.{{Cite web |date=2024-11-11 |title=China advances toward nuclear-powered aircraft carrier with new reactor prototype |url=https://www.foxnews.com/world/china-advances-toward-nuclear-powered-aircraft-carrier-new-reactor-prototype |access-date=2025-04-18 |website=Associated Press |language=en-US}}

On 13 February 2025, reports and images surfaced that showed construction work on a module consistent with an aircraft carrier being carried out at a shipyard in Dalian, in Liaoning province.{{Cite web |last=Newdick |first=Thomas |date=2025-02-13 |title=Structure At Chinese Shipyard May Point To China’s Next Aircraft Carrier’s Capabilities |url=https://www.twz.com/sea/structure-at-chinese-shipyard-may-point-to-chinas-next-aircraft-carrier-capabilities |access-date=2025-03-01 |website=The War Zone |language=en-US}}{{Cite web |date=2025-03-02 |title=China is working on an enormous aircraft carrier that rivals the biggest in the U.S. fleet, analysts say |url=https://www.nbcnews.com/news/world/china-working-enormous-aircraft-carrier-rivals-biggest-us-fleet-analys-rcna193593 |access-date=2025-04-18 |website=NBC News |language=en}} The module apparently was a section of the flight deck and was seen in satellite imagery provided by Google Earth in May 2024. In early 2024, analysts observed, sections of the C3 and C4 catapults were also being built for testing near the dock in Dalian where the second Chinese aircraft carrier Shandong was built from 2013 to 2016.{{Cite web |last=Brahy |first=Jérôme |title=Analysis {{!}} Could China’s future Type 004 replace the USS Gerald R.
