The U-17 Africa Cup of Nations, known as the TotalEnergies U-17 Africa Cup of Nations for sponsorship purposes, is a biennial youth association football competition organized by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for its nations consisting of players under the age of 17. It serves as the African qualification tournament for the FIFA U-17 World Cup.

History

In 1985, FIFA created a World Cup tournament for players under 17 years of age, but CAF organized a knock-out home-and-away qualification competition so as to qualify participants there. In 1995, CAF upgraded the competition into a full standalone competition hosted by a country and named it the African U-17 Championship. On 6 August 2015, the CAF Executive Committee decided to change the tournament's name to the Africa U-17 Cup of Nations. The tournament's name on its official logo after the announcement was however depicted as the U-17 Africa Cup of Nations in line with the senior version, the Africa Cup of Nations.{{cite web|date=9 August 2015|title=Decisions of CAF Executive Committee on 6 August 2015|url=https://www.cafonline.com/news-center/news/decisions-of-caf-executive-committee-on-6-august-2015|url-status=dead|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20220915142306/https://www.cafonline.com/news-center/news/decisions-of-caf-executive-committee-on-6-august-2015|archive-date=15 September 2022|website=CAFOnline.com|access-date=9 August 2022}}

On 21 July 2016, French energy and petroleum giant TotalEnergies (formerly Total S.A) secured an 8-year sponsorship package from CAF to support its competitions.{{cite web|date=21 July 2016|title=Total, Title Sponsor of the Africa Cup of Nations and Partner of African Football|url=https://www.cafonline.com/news-center/news/total-title-sponsor-of-the-africa-cup-of-nations-and-partner-of-african-football|url-status=dead|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20230620191516/https://www.cafonline.com/news-center/news/total-title-sponsor-of-the-africa-cup-of-nations-and-partner-of-african-football|archive-date=20 June 2023|website=CAFOnline.com|access-date=3 June 2022}}{{cite web|date=21 July 2016|title=Total to sponsor CAF competitions for the next eight years|url=http://www.africanews.com/2016/07/21/total-to-sponsor-caf-competitions-for-the-next-eight-years/|website=africanews|access-date=21 July 2016}}

Beginning with the 2023 edition, the tournament will be contested by 12 teams. It would have been in effect from the 2021 edition, but that was cancelled by CAF due to the COVID-19 pandemic in Africa and its impact.{{cite web|date=21 November 2019|title=CAF Holds Executive Committee Meeting ahead of CAN Total U-23 Final|url=https://www.cafonline.com/news-center/news/la-caf-a-tenu-ce-jour-au-caire-la-seconde-reunion-statutaire-de-son-comite-execu|url-status=dead|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20191122040616/https://www.cafonline.com/news-center/news/la-caf-a-tenu-ce-jour-au-caire-la-seconde-reunion-statutaire-de-son-comite-execu|archive-date=22 November 2019|website=CAFOnline.com|access-date=21 November 2019|quote=New formats for youth and women’s competitions based on 12 teams were approved.}}{{Cite web|date=8 March 2021|title=2021 Total U17 Africa Cup of Nations cancelled |url=https://www.cafonline.com/news-center/news/2021-total-u17-africa-cup-of-nations-cancelled|url-status=dead|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20210309060236/https://www.cafonline.com/news-center/news/2021-total-u17-africa-cup-of-nations-cancelled|archive-date=9 March 2021|website=CAFOnline.com|access-date=16 May 2023}}
