Georges St-Pierre was originally scheduled to defend his title in the Welterweight division against Nick Diaz in the main event. However, on December 7, 2011 it was revealed that St-Pierre was injured and could not fight. The featured preliminary bout, a featherweight contest, marked the UFC debut for future UFC Featherweight champion Max Holloway, and the fourth UFC appearance for future Interim UFC Lightweight champion Dustin Poirier. A rematch between Holloway and Poirier for the latter belt headlined UFC 236 over seven years later. The two are scheduled to fight for a third time, at lightweight, in the main event of UFC 318.

The opening bout featured the UFC debut of future UFC Welterweight Championship challenger Stephen Thompson.
