Background

The event was a lead-in to the premiere of The Ultimate Fighter 7 on Spike. Instead of scheduling a two-hour program usually set for UFC Fight Night cards, the event was a three-hour broadcast, a change due to a petition from Sherdog Forums and a letter-writing campaign by MMA fans to Spike.{{webarchive |url=https://web.archive.org/web/20080410160517/https://sports.yahoo.com/mma/news;_ylt=AmKVN9T.hQbKsixZIZABMbg9Eo14?slug=mmajunkie-Fight_Night_13_Three_Hour&prov=mmajunkie&type=lgns |date=2008-04-10 |access-date=2023-04-06}}{{dl|date=April 2023}}

Fight Night 13 was the first UFC event to be held in Colorado since The Ultimate Ultimate was held in Denver on December 16, 1995.{{cite web|url=http://www.mmaweekly.com/absolutenm/templates/dailynews.asp?articleid=5496&zoneid=13|title=UFC Back to Colorado, Adds Parisyan vs. Alves|publisher=MMA Weekly|date=January 19, 2008|access-date=2008-03-18|url-status=dead|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20080322080134/http://www.mmaweekly.com/absolutenm/templates/dailynews.asp?articleid=5496&zoneid=13|archive-date=March 22, 2008}}

Stephan Bonnar was originally slated to take on Matt Hamill, but was forced to withdraw when he suffered a complete tear of his left collateral knee ligament during training.{{cite web|url=http://mmajunkie.com/2008/02/14/ufc-releases-ufc-fight-night-13-televised-card/|title=UFC Releases UFC Fight Night 13 Televised Card|last=Stupp|first=Dann

A planned bout between lightweights Spencer Fisher and Marcus Aurélio was cancelled due to a shoulder injury Fisher suffered during training.{{cite web
