UGC 4904 is a barred spiral galaxy in the constellation Lynx. Its velocity with respect to the cosmic microwave background is 1880 ± 15{{nbsp}}km/s, which corresponds to a Hubble distance of {{convert|27.74 ± 1.96|Mpc|Mly|abbr=on|lk=on|order=flip}}. The first known reference to this galaxy comes from Part 2 of the Morphological Catalogue of Galaxies, published in 1964, where it is listed as MCG +07-19-054.{{cite journal|bibcode=1964MCG...C02....0V | title=Morphological catalogue of galaxies. Supernova
On October 20, 2004, a supernova impostor was observed by Japanese amateur astronomer Kōichi Itagaki within the galaxy. This same star may have transitioned from a luminous blue variable star to a Wolf–Rayet star{{cite web | title=Massive Star Burps, Then Explodes | url=http://chandra.harvard.edu/press/07_releases/press_040407.html | publisher=Univ. of California, at Berkeley | accessdate=April 4, 2007}} shortly before it was observed as blowing up as supernova SN 2006jc (type{{nbsp}}Ibn, mag. 13.8){{cite web | website=Transient Name Server | title=SN{{nbsp}}2006jc | url=https://www.wis-tns.org/object/2006jc | publisher = IAU | access-date=13 November 2024}} on October 11, 2006.{{cite web | title=NASA – Supernova Imposter Goes Supernova | url=http://www.nasa.gov/centers/goddard/news/topstory/2007/supernova_imposter.html | publisher=NASA.Gov | accessdate=April 4, 2007}}
