UGC 8335 (Arp 238) is a pair of strongly interacting spiral galaxies. They have been distorted by extreme tidal forces, creating prominent tidal tails and a bridge of gas and stars between the galaxies.{{Cite web|title = HubbleSite - NewsCenter - Cosmic Collisions Galore!|date=2008-04-24|url = http://hubblesite.org/newscenter/archive/releases/2008/16/image/ah/|website = hubblesite.org|accessdate = 2015-12-10}}{{Cite web|title = Astronomy Picture of the Day: 4/19/13 - UGC 8335|url = http://futurism.com/astronomy-picture-of-the-day-41913-ugc-8335/|website = Futurism|publisher = |accessdate = 2015-12-10|language = en-US}}

UGC 8335 is about 400 million light-years from Earth, in the constellation Ursa Major. It is the 238th object in Halton Arp's Atlas of Peculiar Galaxies.

Supernova

On 25 April 2012, Doug Rich discovered supernova SN 2012by in UGC 8335.{{Cite web|title = Bright Supernovae - 2012.|url = http://www.rochesterastronomy.org/sn2012/index.html#2012by|website = www.rochesterastronomy.org|accessdate = 2015-12-10}}{{Cite web|title = List of Supernovae|url = http://www.cbat.eps.harvard.edu/lists/Supernovae.html|website = www.cbat.eps.harvard.edu|accessdate = 2015-12-10}} At the time of discovery, the supernova had a magnitude of 17.6.{{Cite web|url = https://www.fcaglp.unlp.edu.ar/pipermail/iauc/2012-April/002731.html|title = [IAUC] CBET 3095: 20120429 : SUPERNOVA 2012by IN UGC 8335 = PSN J13152890+6207478|accessdate = 2015-12-10|website = Electronic Telegram No. 3095|publisher = Central Bureau for Astronomical Telegrams|last = Green|first = Daniel|date = 2012-04-29|url-status = dead|archiveurl = https://web.archive.org/web/20151224001438/https://www.fcaglp.unlp.edu.ar/pipermail/iauc/2012-April/002731.html|archivedate = 2015-12-24}} A peak magnitude measurement of 17.3 was recorded two days later, on April 27. SN 2012by was classified as a type II supernova by Tomasella et al. at the Astronomical Observatory of Padova. The research group also found that its spectrum was similar to that of SN 1996as.
