On August 8, 2022, James was damaged when the cutter ran aground while underway. After an investigation Captain Marc Brandt was permanently relieved of duties as the commanding officer of James.{{cite press release|title=US Coast Guard Cutter James' commanding officer permanently relieved|url=https://content.govdelivery.com/accounts/USDHSCG/bulletins/3369fd1|publisher=U.S. Coast Guard Atlantic Area|date=2022-11-07|access-date=2022-11-07}}
