Mission

{{Advert|date=December 2024}}

Unite America aims to bridge the partisan divide by passing electoral reforms that incentivize leaders to represent their constituents and support candidates who will work across the aisle. It endorses candidates on both federal and statewide levels. Unite America candidates and supporters subscribe to a set of principles laid out in the "Unity Principles."{{Cite news|url=https://www.uniteamerica.org/declaration|title=Declaration of Independents|work=Unite America|access-date=2018-05-24|language=en}}

= Strategy =

Unite America works by making strategic investments to accelerate the democracy reform movement. Through the [https://www.uniteamerica.org/uniteamericafund Unite America Fund], the organization invests in campaigns across four key reform areas:

The organization's commitment to these reforms is based in part on the Harvard Business School study by Katherine Gehl and Michael Porter [https://www.hbs.edu/competitiveness/Documents/why-competition-in-the-politics-industry-is-failing-america.pdf Why Competition in the Politics Industry is Failing America].

= "Unity Principles" =

Each of Unite America's endorsed candidates abides by a unifying set of principles. Formerly called the "Declaration of Independents," {{Cite news|url=https://www.politico.com/story/2018/02/27/independents-midterms-unite-america-426629|title=Statewide independents roll out national slate|work=POLITICO|access-date=2018-05-24|language=en}} published in February 2018, the principles are now called the Unity Principles to reflect the larger aims of the organization. Developed by Unite America's leadership, the document lays out the movement's five key tenets:

{{blockquote|First, we put the public interest ahead of any partisan or special interest. Government should represent "We the people" – not the party leaders or those who can buy access to power.

Second, we use common sense and find common ground to solve problems. We reject today's zero-sum politics and instead work together with Democrats and Republicans in an inclusive and civil manner to get things done.

Third, we stand for the timeless values of opportunity, equality and stewardship. We want to empower every American to realize their full potential, uphold equal rights for all under the law, and ultimately leave a stronger country for the next generation.

Fourth, we champion integrity, transparency and accountability in politics. We seek to rebuild America's trust in government by holding ourselves to the highest standards of honor and honesty and by fixing the broken incentives that contribute to political dysfunction.

Fifth, we believe in shared responsibility of civic engagement. As Americans, we understand it is our civic duty to be informed and engaged on important issues."{{Cite news|url=https://www.realclearpolitics.com/articles/2018/02/27/independents_can_unite_america__136378.html|title=Independents Can Unite America {{!}} RealClearPolitics|access-date=2018-05-24}}}}

Reform strategy

In 2019, Unite America released the first State of Democracy Report in which they graded every state based on their status in five reform areas.{{Cite web|url=https://thefulcrum.us/big-picture/states-adopt-voting-reform|title=Report ranks every state on 5 key democracy reform moves|date=2019-06-26|website=The Fulcrum|language=en|access-date=2019-10-04}} In September 2019, Unite America announced their plan to invest in their first portfolio of campaigns based on these reforms.

Partnerships

= State-focused partnerships =

In an effort to build the movement from the ground up, Unite America endorses and provides resources to independent candidates for state legislatures in a number of viable states, including Colorado, New Mexico, Maine, Alaska, and Washington.

== Unite Colorado ==

Unite America formalized its Colorado-concentrated efforts for statehouse elections with the organization of its largest state-focused affiliate, Unite Colorado.{{Cite news|url=http://www.westword.com/news/unite-colorado-introduces-new-independent-candidates-9866089|title=Unite Colorado's Plan to Snuff Out Partisan Political Bullsh*t|last=Roberts|first=Michael|date=2018-01-09|work=Westword|access-date=2018-05-24}} Troiano identified the state's wide-ranging political leanings and the potential for a historic independent candidate victory as the driving motivations for this strategy. == Washington Independents ==

Washington Independents, with support from Unite America, launched in fall of 2017 with the intention of supporting independent, centrist candidates in Washington. More specifically, it worked with four moderate primary challengers — two on the right and two on the left. Three of the four won their races.{{Cite web|url=https://www.uniteamerica.org/what_we_did_in_virginia|title=What we did in Virginia|website=Unite America|language=en|access-date=2019-07-01}}
