United Front (South Africa)
The United Front was formally launched in South Africa in 2015, following preparatory activities in 2014, including a summit in November with 350 delegates representing labour unions, social movements and popular organisations, faith-based organisations, NGOs and anti-capitalist formations."South Africa: Radical NUMSA-backed United Front declares 'Enough is enough'!", Links: International Journal of Socialist Renewal, online at http://www.links.org.au/node/4199 It was launched with the support of the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA), which severed ties with the African National Congress and South African Communist Party at its December 2013 congress to foster left-wing alternatives.Jane Duncan, 2014, "Numsa's United Front: Forward to the Past?," South African Civil Society Information Service (SACSIS), online at http://sacsis.org.za/site/article/2207 While NUMSA defined itself as Marxist-Leninist, it envisaged the United Front as open to a range of forces, and as distinct from NUMSA itself.NUMSA, 22 May 2014, "Social Movement or United Front?," NUMSA News, online at https://www.numsa.org.za/article/social-movement-united-front/ Significant differences of opinion emerged in the United Front from an early stage.Phillip de Wet, 14 December 2014, "Numsa's Front: United only in opposition", Mail and Guardian, online at https://mg.co.za/article/2014-12-14-numsas-front-united-only-in-opposition/ The United Front effectively supplanted the Democratic Left Front, a smaller formation which had been established in 2011, itself founded following the collapse of the Anti-Privatisation Forum. Given the connection to NUMSA, both the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) which had expelled NUMSA, and the South African Communist Party, remained outside the United Front, the party proposing an alternative "left popular front" (LPF).South African Communist Party Central Committee, 21 September 2018, "Building a left popular front: Central Committee political report", online at http://www.politicsweb.co.za/politics/building-a-left-popular-front--sacp-cc
