History

The hospital was conceptualized in the mid-1980s under the name Continental Hospital.{{cite web |url=http://www.uhlbd.com/page/about |title=About |website=United Hospital |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20160317225430/http://www.uhlbd.com/page/about |archive-date=17 March 2016}}

It sits on a {{convert|6|acre|adj=on}} site on the west shore of Gulshan Lake in Dhaka.{{cite web |url=https://www.cpkukreja.com/architecture/continental-hospital.html |title=Continental Hospital, Dhaka |website=CP Kukreja Architects}} By 1997, Indian architects C P Kukreja and Associates had produced a design consisting of two square blocks, the northern one smaller than the southern one because the site tapers to the north. The blocks are rotated roughly 45 degrees from the lake shore to afford lake views from two sides of each block. The two blocks, which nearly touch at one corner, are connected by an atrium. Each block has a basement and eight floors above ground.{{cite magazine |date=May–June 1997 |title=Continental Apollo Hospital |magazine=Architecture + Design |volume=14 |issue=3 |pages=28–31 |issn=0970-2369}}
