Utah is a state in the Mountain West sub-region of the Western United States.{{Cite web|last1=Marston|first1=Richard A.|last2=Eardley|first2=Armand J.|date=March 11, 2020|title=Rocky Mountains|url=https://www.britannica.com/place/Rocky-Mountains|url-status=live|access-date=August 6, 2021|website=Encyclopedia Britannica|archive-date=November 27, 2020|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20201127012948/https://www.britannica.com/place/Rocky-Mountains}} Since its admission to the Union in January 1896, it has participated in 32 United States presidential elections. In the 1896 presidential election, first presidential election in which the state participated, Utah was won in a landslide by Democrat William Jennings Bryan, who received almost 83 percent of the state's vote.{{Sfn|Guide to U.S. Elections|2010|p=773}} 1896 was the only election in which Utah voted for a losing democratic candidate. The state would quickly swing towards the Republican Party in the years that followed, although it would remain a swing state at the presidential level well into the 1940s.{{Cite web|last=Powell|first=Alan K.|title=Elections in the State of Utah|url=https://www.uen.org/utah_history_encyclopedia/e/ELECTIONS.shtml|url-status=live|access-date=August 6, 2021|website=Utah History Encyclopedia|archive-date=March 8, 2021|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20210308161742/https://www.uen.org/utah_history_encyclopedia/e/ELECTIONS.shtml}} In the 1912 election, Utah was one of only two states won by incumbent Republican President William Howard Taft.{{Cite web|last=Arnold|first=Peri E.|title=William Taft: Campaigns and Elections|url=https://millercenter.org/president/taft/campaigns-and-elections|url-status=live|access-date=August 6, 2021|website=Miller Center|date=4 October 2016|archive-date=June 10, 2021|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20210610201723/https://millercenter.org/president/taft/campaigns-and-elections}} However, the state would vote for the Democratic nominee by a large margin in 1916, 1932, 1936, 1940, and 1944, and by a narrow margin in 1948. However, since the latter election, the state has become very heavily Republican and has only voted for a Democratic presidential nominee once (in 1964, amidst a national Democratic landslide).{{Sfn|Presidential elections|1997|p=111}}
