The University of Aysén (Universidad de Aysén) is a Chilean state university, created by law in 2015,{{Cite web|url=http://www.leychile.cl/Navegar?idNorma=1080237&idVersion=2015-08-07|title="Ley N.º 20.842: Crea las universidades estatales de la Región de O'Higgins y de la Región de Aysén"|first=Biblioteca del Congreso|last=Nacional|website=www.bcn.cl/leychile}} during the second government of President Michelle Bachelet, along with the University of O'Higgins. It is located in the Aysén Region. It began its operations in March 2017.http://www.cumplimiento.gob.cl/?ver=2063 Cumplimiento del Programa de Gobierno 2014-2018
Along with the University of O'Higgins, it is the first state university to be created in Chile in more than two decades, the last created in 1993.[http://www.leychile.cl/Navegar?idNorma=30606&idVersion=1993-08-30 «Ley N.º 19.239: Crea la Universidad Tecnológica Metropolitana», Biblioteca del Congreso Nacional de Chile] O'Higgins and Aysén were the only Chilean regions where no campuses of University of Chile or the Technical State University (UTE) were created, which were converted to "regional universities" beginning in 1981,[http://www.leychile.cl/Navegar?idNorma=7169&idVersion=1980-12-13 «Decreto Ley N° 3541: Delega facultades que indica», Biblioteca del Congreso Nacional de Chile] and so were until 2015 the only regions without their own state universities.
