History

Field hockey in Uruguay is traditionally a sport played by the middle and upper-class, with most playing activity among private schools in the capital city, Montevideo.{{cite web |last1=Lerena |first1=Mercedes |title=Youth Hockey Situation in Uruguay |url=http://www.panamhockey.org:80/eng/develop/2003/2003-0406-uruguay.htm |website=Pan Am Hockey |access-date=16 April 2023 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20041222063957/http://www.panamhockey.org:80/eng/develop/2003/2003-0406-uruguay.htm |archive-date=22 December 2004 |date=4 April 2003}} In 1999, the Uruguayan Olympic Committee constructed the first synthetic hockey field in the country.

To ensure better player retention, an U17 team was created in 2002. By 2003, efforts were underway to introduce the sport to more state schools.
