History
Durgapur Expressway is the first expressway of West Bengal. In 1986, Government of India approved an expressway between the cities of Kolkata and Durgapur. However, two consecutive highways were commissioned namely Durgapur Expressway (Dankuni to Palsit) and Panagarh-Palsit Highway (Palsit to Panagarh, near Durgapur). Following NHAI tendor, the both highways were constructed by Malaysia based Gamuda Berhad.https://gamuda.com.my/our-expertise/engineering-construction/panagarh-palsit-highway-and-durgapur-expressways/ It was built as a two laned road. Post 2002, the expressway was made 4 laned with a cost of ₹466 crores.https://www.projectstoday.com/News/Durgapur-Expressway-Project-Ten-companies-pre-qualify
In 2020, massive renovation works started and proposals for lane expansion were given.https://bengali.news18.com/news/south-bengal/after-a-long-time-construction-works-started-at-two-no-national-highway-sr-501157.html In 2022, work for 6 laned road, service lanes and bypasses started with an budget of ₹1700 crores. 14 subways and 18 truck parking bays along with footbridges and service lanes were planned. However, in subsequent times more ₹100 crores were demanded for smooth functioning. https://www.anandabazar.com/west-bengal/howrah-hooghly/nhai-requested-central-government-to-allot-more-capital-for-the-renovation-work-of-durgapur-expressway/cid/1430070 As of 2024, the 6 laning expansion is still under construction.
As of 2024, in the Panagarh- Palsit stretch, 41 subways and 6 flyovers are under construction and in the Dankuni-Palsit stretch, 19 subways and 5 foot overbridges are under construction.https://www.anandabazar.com/app/west-bengal/bardhaman/works-of-durgapur-expressway-postponed-again-due-to-protest/cid/1567582https://eisamay.com/west-bengal-news/bardhaman-news/durgapur-expressway-construction-work-face-crisis-due-to-land-acquisition/112476109.cms
Route
Durgapur expressway runs entirely on the east side of Hooghly river. From south to north, it starts from Dankuni intersection (with Belgharia Expressway and NH 16) and it transverses through major places like Singur, Masagram, Palsit, Bardhaman, Galsi and terminates at the Panagarh near Durgapur. The entire road is part of NH 19.
The expressway is 4 laned from Kolkata Airport to Dakshineswar and the extended portion upto Rajchandrapur along with Nivedita Setu is 6 laned. There are no service lanes and main carriageway lanes can not be expanded which becomes an issue for National Highways Authority of India.{{Cite web |title=Expressway upkeep set to be state onus |url=https://www.telegraphindia.com/west-bengal/expressway-upkeep-set-to-be-state-onus/cid/1421752 |access-date=2024-11-13}}
