Draft of major rewrite of Wings of Fire

This is the unfinished draft I made of a rewrite of the Wings of Fire article. As you may be able to tell, it is a terrible fancrufty mess of useless information. I have generously preserved it for future generations to cringe at.

The series currently consists of three arcs of five books apiece, which focus on young dragons ("dragonets") fulfilling or subverting prophecies to save their world. Each arc consists of five books, and each book centers on its own protagonist, whose story is told through a third person limited perspective. Fifteen books in the main series have been released, as well as four novellas (known as Winglets), two extended-length standalone novels (known as Legends), multiple companion books and a presently-releasing series graphic novel adaptations of titles from the main series. The series is edited by Amanda Maciel and features covers drawn by Joy Ang; many of the titles have been recorded as audiobooks by Shannon McManus.

Each Wings of Fire novel has been released in hardcover and paperback format (in addition to ongoing graphic novel adaptations). A fourth arc has been confirmed by Sutherland to be in the works.

== ''The Dragonet Prophecy (2012)'' ==

Twenty years after Queen Oasis of the SandWings was killed by three treasure-hunting humans, the continent of Pyrrhia is still at war, with each of Oasis's daughters - Blister, Blaze, and Burn - each trying their hardest to secure the SandWing throne. A mystical prophecy known as The Dragonet Prophecy foretells the arrival of five dragonets who will choose one of the warring sisters to be queen and end the war for good. Clay and his friends Tsunami, Glory, Starflight, and Sunny, are those dragonets, and they have no idea where to even start. After a dragon named Morrowseer orders Glory's execution simply because she is a RainWing, Clay and Tsunami break out of the cave they have been trapped in for the past six years only to be imprisoned by Queen Scarlet and forced to engage in gladiator fights in her arena. The Dragonets of Destiny escape with the help of a SkyWing named Peril, potentially killing Scarlet in the process, and decide to find their families and meet each of the three candidates for the SandWing throne before making their decision.

== ''The Lost Heir (2013)'' ==

The Dragonets of Destiny have made their way to the Kingdom of the Sea, a large underwater kingdom inhabited by the SeaWing tribe, in search of Tsunami's mother, Queen Coral. Shortly before meeting Coral, Tsunami learns that she is one of Coral's few surviving heirs; the rest have been killed off by an unknown assassin. Tsunami makes it her personal mission to integrate herself into the tribe and uncover who has been killing off the kingdom's princesses with the help of another SeaWing named Riptide. Blister, one of the SandWings vying for the throne, arrives and uncovers the fact that Riptide has been working with the Talons of Peace, a shadowy resistance group responsible for imprisoning the Dragonets of Destiny their whole lives. From there, Tsunami proceeds to uncover who has been assassinating Coral's daughters but instead of rewarding her, Coral is manipulated by Blister into putting the Dragonets of Destiny in prison. Tsunami's sister Anemone breaks them out with her animus magic and the Dragonets of Destiny escape along with Riptide's father, Webs, in the chaos of a SkyWing attack on the SeaWings' Summer Palace where they were held prisoner.

== ''The Hidden Kingdom (2013)'' ==

The Dragonets of Destiny arrive at Pyrrhia's mysterious and impenetrable rainforest, hoping that the RainWings who reside within can help them heal Webs, who was poisoned by Blister's scorpion-like venomous tail barb. Glory hopes that this trip to the rainforest will allow her to find her family, but she is disappointed because all of the stereotypes about RainWings being lazy and ignorant turned out to be true. To make things worse, RainWings have been disappearing without a trace, and their queen does not care. Glory decides to get to the bottom of the mystery and discovers the NightWings' secret volcanic island home, accessible through a magic tunnel in the rainforest, as well as the locations of the missing RainWings. Even with this information, Queen Magnificent still refuses to help the missing RainWings, so Glory challenges her for the throne and wins, becoming the new RainWing queen.

== ''The Dark Secret (2013)'' ==

While the rest of the Dragonets of Destiny are watching Glory challenge Queen Magnificent for the RainWing throne, Starflight is kidnapped by NightWings and taken to their volcanic island. There, he learns of an "alternate" set of Dragonets of Destiny who don't meet the requirements set out by the Dragonet Prophecy. Starflight also learns that the NightWings are planning to come through the rainforest tunnel one day, massacre the RainWings, and take the rainforest for themselves, preferably with the help of Blister, who they want to be queen of the SandWings. One of the alternate Dragonets of Destiny, Fatespeaker, befriends Starflight and together they discover a Dreamvisitor, an ancient and magical gemstone that provides the ability to drop into the dreams of others and communicate with them. Starflight uses the Dreamvisitor to warn Glory of the upcoming attack and escapes the volcanic island with Fatespeaker. Reunited with his friends, Starflight then goes with Glory to rescue the RainWings from the volcanic island. As they are leaving, the volcano begins to erupt and Morrowseer, the dragon who ordered Glory's execution, tells the Dragonets of Destiny that the prophecy is not real, and was created as a part of the Nightwings' elaborate plan to take over the rainforest. The volcano then erupts, killing Morrowseer and permanently blinding Starflight, who only survives the eruption thanks to Clay's fireproof scales.

== ''The Brightest Night (2014)'' ==

Back in the rainforest after the volcanic eruption, Sunny is taken hostage by a trio of NightWings who want to use her as leverage to gain control of the rainforest from Queen Glory. She escapes and manages to steal the Obsidian Mirror from them, a magical mirror that allows one to spy on anybody they choose. Instead of returning to the rainforest to regroup with her friends, Sunny instead follows the NightWings to the Kingdom of Sand. There, she finds her mother, Thorn, who is the leader of a militia called the Outclaws that are the only law and order in the crime-ridden Scorpion Den. Before she gets any time to catch up with her mother, Sunny is kidnapped again, this time by a pair of SandWings hoping to trade her to Burn in exchange for amnesty for deserting her army. Sunny escapes Burn's stronghold, again with Peril's help, and learns that she looks unusual because she is a NightWing-SandWing hybrid. Sunny flies back to the rainforest to find her friends, making a stop at Jade Mountain to find Stonemover, who is her father. After she reunites with her friends, they call all three SandWing sisters to Burn's stronghold, and decide that Thorn should be queen instead of Blaze, Blister, or Burn. Burn is then killed by a deadly dragonbite viper, which also injures Clay. Blister attempts to steal the Eye of Onyx - a magical necklace that kills those unworthy of the SandWing throne - but gets killed by it instead, leaving Blaze as the only surviving sister. She accepts Thorn as the SandWing queen and the war is brought to an end after two decades of fighting.

== ''Moon Rising (2014)'' ==

After the conclusion of the War of SandWing succession, the Dragonets of Destiny established Jade Mountain Academy, an intertribal school where dragonets from each tribe learn how to communicate and collaborate with each other. Moonwatcher is one of the dragonets selected for the Academy, and she also happens to be the first NightWing in centuries to have the tribe's legendary foresight and mind-reading abilities. She is overwhelmed by her powers at first, especially since she is hiding them from the other dragons in her winglet. After a while she starts hearing a voice in her head, and the voice gives her advice on how to handle her powers. The voice is revealed to be Darkstalker, an impossibly ancient and powerful animus dragon from Pyrrhia's past, who was trapped in suspended animation by a magical bracelet. Shortly after Darkstalker reveals his identity, someone sets off a firebomb in Jade Mountain Academy's history cave, killing two dragonets and injuring a third. Moon is forced to reveal her powers to her winglet and Qibli in particular decides to help her use them to find the culprit behind the deadly explosion. After some searching and a second failed murder attempt, the culprit is revealed to be Sora, Clay's younger sister. Sora's target was supposed to be Icicle, an IceWing responsible for killing one of Sora's sisters. Icicle is revealed to be conspiring with Queen Scarlet (who is still alive) to kill the Dragonets of Destiny in exchange for Hailstorm, her brother who was presumed dead after becoming a prisoner of war. After an altercation in the library, Icicle escapes and Moon and her winglet decide to follow her and save Hailstorm.

== ''Winter Turning (2015)'' ==

Winter, surprised to learn that Hailstorm is still alive, decides to embark on a quest to find him. He begrudgingly allows the rest of his winglet to come, shortly after Moonwatcher delivers a cryptic prophecy about the impending destruction of Jade Mountain. His search leads him to the rainforest, where he finds that Icicle has killed one of the NightWings who now live there. He follows her trail and corners her on the old volcanic island the NightWings used to inhabit where Icicle nearly kills Kinkajou, one of Winter's friends, but Glory and her RainWings arrive just in time to use a tranquilizer on Icicle. Moon uses her mind reading powers to find Scarlet's location in Icicle's mind, and the group tracks her down. Kinkajou is injured by a NightWing who is working for Scarlet, but they also manage to rescue Hailstorm. Winter and Hailstorm return to the Ice Kingdom, where Winter's parents attempt to sacrifice his life in exchange for Hailstorm's place in the IceWings' social hierarchy. In the process, Winter finds and frees Foeslayer, a NightWing who was doomed by an animus spell to die painfully over and over again. She reveals that she is the mother of Darkstalker, and she and Winter escape the Ice Kingdom together.

== ''Escaping Peril (2015)'' ==

After Queen Scarlet visits Jade Mountain and attempts to scare the Dragonets of Destiny with a fake version of Glory's decapitated head, Peril decides to chase down the ex-queen and kill her. Along the way, she befriends Turtle, a SeaWing who does not seem to be afraid of her deadly firescales power. Together they search for Scarlet and regroup with the rest of Turtle's winglet, but after Peril causes an accident that almost killed Winter, she decides to break off from the group and search for Scarlet on her own. As she is flying away, she encounters Soar, who is her father. Soar leads her to Scarlet and reveals that he is working for her, and Scarlet reveals that Soar is actually a RainWing named Chameleon using a transformation spell acquired from a magical scroll he found. Chameleon gifts Peril an enchanted necklace to remove her firescales, allowing her to finally navigate the world without the constant risk of setting something on fire. Peril then decides to work with Scarlet to depose her daughter, Ruby, who took the throne after Scarlet's disappearance. It is then revealed that in addition to removing Peril's firescales, her necklace also had a spell in it to make her have undying loyalty to Scarlet. Ruby properly challenges Scarlet for the throne, and Peril breaks a spell placed on her, revealing that Ruby was actually Tourmaline, one of Scarlet's daughters who went missing years ago. Tourmaline wins the royal challenge and forces Chameleon to turn her back into Ruby with his scroll, which Peril and her winglet then stole from Chameleon. After Qibli and Winter fight over who should use the scroll, Peril burns it, inadvertently freeing Darkstalker from his underground prison and setting the events of Moon's prophecy into motion.
