SUN Area Vocational-Technical School was first envisioned in the early 1960's as a solution to the shortage of skilled labor in central Pennsylvania.{{cite news|title=Labor Shortage Points to Need of Tech School|newspaper=Sunbury Daily Item|date=August 14, 1965}} Vocational training was necessary, however questions over district participation and the location of the new school prevented it's inception until 20 local districts accepted the school's Articles of Agreement in 1967.{{cite news|title=Schoolmen OK Agreement for Tech Program|newspaper=Sunbury Daily Item|date=January 13, 1967}}

SUN Area Vocational-Technical School opened in the fall of 1967 at its first location on Market St. in Sunbury, Pennsylvania.{{cite news|title=AVTS Architect Hired, School Opens in Fall|newspaper=Sunbury Daily Item|date=April 22, 1067}} The school originally served students from Lewisburg, Mifflinburg, Adams Township, Beavertown, Spring Township, Shikellamy, Monroe Township, Chapman Township, Jackson Township, Freeburg , Selinsgrove Boro, Penn Township, Union Township, Shamokin Dam, Middlecreek, Center, Middleburg, Franklin, West Perry, and Perry.{{cite news|title=Vo Tech School Operation Seen For September|newspaper=Sunbury Daily Item|date=February 21, 1967}}

Throughout the subsequent 4 decades many district mergers occurred. Today SUN Tech still serves the same geographic area which now covers Lewisburg, Mifflinburg, Midd-West, Shikellamy, and Selinsgrove.

In 1987 SUN Area Vocational-Technical School would be shortened to SUN Area Technical School. In 1995 it was renamed SUN Area Career and Technology Center, and once again in 2009 the school was renamed SUN Area Technical Institute.

In 2013 SUN Area Technical Institute purchased the Playworld Systems building on Cherry St. in New Berlin, PA. This location was named the SUN Tech West Campus and is currently being remodeled for future expansion.
