Hello and welcome to my user page here on Wikipedia! If I've made a mistake somewhere please feel free to politely let me know on my talk page and I will do my best to fix it. If you disagree with my editing, please try to discuss it with me first. I've been a victim of nasty allegations a while ago and I can assure you, [http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Log/block&page=User%3AColdmachine I am not a sockpuppet] [http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User_talk:Akhilleus&diff=prev&oldid=142726761] (though [http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Log&type=block&page=User:IPSOS my accuser was], and so, it turns out, was the non-admin who declined my unblock requests...)

These are the principles I'll be trying to adhere to while editing on Wikipedia:

  • Opening discussion on talk pages for all major edits before making changes, on the basis of seeking to build consensus before making changes.
  • I am not interested in personal attacks. I'm happy for my edits to be reverted or challenged, but treat me with some basic manners as a fellow human please.
  • That being bold does not excuse failure to seek consensus or discuss changes.

who is user:coldmachine?

There really is a person behind these words. I hail from the United Kingdom where I consider myself British first and English second.

I am midway through a PhD in Information Science, obtained my Masters in Classics (strictly Ancient History) from Worcester College at the University of Oxford and my Masters in Electronic Publishing from University College, London, and have published in academic journals. I think Socrates had it right; one can never be educated enough since it helps diminish our individual ignorance - the objectives of Wikipedia, even if the processes and methods are occasionally suspect, are admirable.

I am an aquarist with pet pufferfish and rare loaches, I (ostensibly) own a cat, and I generally love animals. I'd love to drop everything and live on a smallholding.

The world is an amazing and diverse place and I'd love to travel it more. Nothing irritates me more than people claiming to have 'done' a country...

Here are the places I've visited and sampled so far:
