The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (abbreviated USSR {{langx|ru|{{audio|Ru-CCCP.ogg|Сою́з Сове́тских Социалисти́ческих Респу́блик, СССР}}}}); tr.: Soyuz Sovetskikh Sotsialisticheskikh Respublik, SSSR), more commonly known as the Soviet Union, was a constitutionally socialist state that existed in Eurasia from 1922 to 1991. It was often incorrectly, and sometimes intentionally, referred to as Russia, its largest and dominant constituent state. The state coat of arms of the Soviet Union ({{langx|ru|Государственный герб СССР}}) was adopted in 1923 and was used until the break-up of the Soviet Union in 1991. Although it technically is an emblem rather than a coat of arms, since it doesn't follow heraldical rules, in Russian it is called герб (transliteration: gerb), the word used for a traditional coat of arms.
